Why People Are Not Hired For Available Jobs

When 153 American companies were asked to list the reasons why they rejected applicants who were interviewed for available jobs. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS and CHARACTERISTICS were the major factors. Only two of the 40 reasons listed are related to educational and/or technical competence.

  2. Overbearing attitude - conceited, arrogant, 'superiority complex'.

  3. Inability to express oneself clearly - poor voice, diction or grammar.

  4. Lack of clear career goals.

  5. Lack of interest or enthusiasm - passive, indifferent attitude.

  6. Lack of confidence and pose - very ill at ease or overlay nervous.

  7. Overemphasis of money - interested on it best salary.

  8. Poor scholastic record.

  9. Unwillingness to start at bottom - expects too much too soon.

  10. Evasive - makes excuses hedges about unfavorable information, avoids answer.

  11. Lack of diplomacy or tact.

  12. Lack of maturity.

  13. Lack of courtesy - ill mannered.

  14. Condemnation of previous employers.

  15. Poor attitude about school.

  16. Lack of vitality - no spark.

  17. Failure to look the interviewer in the eye.

  18. Limp, fish hand shake.

  19. Inability to relate skills and experience to position applied for.

  20. Sloppy application form or resume outdated.

  21. Lack of genuine interest in position - merely shopping around, just want job.

  22. Lack of commitment - wants the job only for a short time.

  23. Little sense of humor.
