American Job Interview
Be prepared for more than one job interview and some psychological tests in the United States.
Punctuality is expected, so arrive 5 minutes before the job interview. Prepare yourself - find out information about the company you want to work for.
It is customary to present a business card, resume, references and copies of professional and academic qualifications at an initial job interview. You will never get a second chance to make a first impression!
The job interview begins with introductions and hand shakes. Firm handshakes are usually brief. If you are introducing yourself, do not use your professional title. Maintain eye contact while talking to someone. Keep your distance when conversing. Americans are generally uncomfortable with same-sex touching.
Do not sit until invited. Talk effectively demonstrating your knowledge of the industry and/or the company, do not interrupt the interviewer and criticize former employers.
Prepare for all kinds of questions about yourself, your skills, qualifications, experience and hobbies. Answer them as fully as you can, avoiding yes and no answers.
After the job interview, send a short thank you letter, to thank the interviewer.
American Job Interview Dress Code
It is important to demonstrate at the job interview good appearance as well as good manners.
Dress neatly and conservatively. Men usually wear suits and ties. Women wear dresses or conservative skirt suits, with simple accessories.
