JOB TITLE: General Manager

REPORTS TO: Vice President of Operations and COO

FLSA STATUS: Salaried, Ag Exempt

FUNCTION: Oversees Feedlot operations and directs Feedlot management team. Completes operational requirements through delegation to management team; follows up on work results.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Other duties may be assigned.

• Manages 5-6 subordinate managers. Responsible for overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these individuals. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training management employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining management employees; and addressing complaints/problems. Sets a positive example for employees by modeling safe work practices and following safety rules and policies. Communicate critical safety information to employees by conducting or participating in regular safety training, monitoring workplace for unsafe/noncompliant behavior.

• Develops management team by providing information, advice, educational opportunities, and experiential growth opportunities. Provides a positive leadership example to subordinates by modeling corporate values.

• Enhances beef production by employing industry best practices and available technology in the areas of cattle nutrition, health, and handling.

• Oversees the purchase of commodities (including: corn, feeder cattle, proteins, supplements, liquids and other roughage sources) by keeping abreast of facility needs/preferences/Company position, and establishing rapport with outside suppliers.

• Maximizes profit through prudent procurement of commodities, management of expenses, marketing of cattle, and execution of risk management strategies.

• Oversees and participates in preparation of capital and operating budgets by collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.

• Monitors recordkeeping, environmental compliance, and operational activities to assure adherence to applicable State and Federal laws, and Company policies/standards through open communications with management team.

• Engages in long-term planning by anticipating future trends, opportunities and consequences.

• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies or industry related organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Undergraduate degree; or significant related feedlot experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Supervisory experience with proven track record

• Knowledge of basic business/accounting

• Ability to write routine correspondence and present information before groups.

• Knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; and Database software.

• Valid driver’s license.

• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations.

• General computer literacy and understanding of networked environment.

COMPETENCY: Expected to understand livestock and commodity markets, participate in meetings, lead a team effectively, coordinate projects, manage difficult or emotional employee situations, understand business implications of decisions, work within approved budget, develop and implement cost saving measures, conserve organizational resources, exhibit sound and accurate judgment, adapt to change in the environment, and demonstrate knowledge of EEO.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and I can be exposed to work in high places. Employee is required to wear hardhat; eye, ear and respiratory protection when in designated areas. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus. Animal handling requires dexterity.
