  • Schedule: PRN | 1st Shift | Days Vary
  • Location: On-site at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, NC
  • Remote Work: This is not a remote or hybrid position

Position Summary

The PRN Staff Respiratory Therapist/Technician provides high-quality respiratory and cardiopulmonary care to neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patient populations. This position performs a wide range of respiratory therapy procedures, diagnostic testing, and patient care responsibilities while supporting departmental operations and maintaining compliance with regulatory and clinical standards.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong clinical judgment, professionalism, adaptability, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care program required
  • Associate degree, Bachelor degree, or certificate completion in Respiratory Care required

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of respiratory care experience preferred

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current North Carolina Respiratory Care license (NCRCB) required
  • Current NBRC credentials required
  • Current BLS/CPR certification required
  • ACLS certification required within six (6) months of hire
  • PALS certification required within six (6) months of hire
  • NRP certification required within six (6) months of hire

Essential Functions

Leadership & Departmental Support

  • Work under the direction of the Department Director while independently performing assigned clinical responsibilities
  • Assist with orientation, training, and education of staff and students as requested
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist in developing and improving departmental policies and procedures
  • Report equipment or inventory concerns promptly
  • Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of departmental leadership when needed

Clinical & Technical Responsibilities

  • Perform oxygen, aerosol, humidity, bronchodilator, and chest physiotherapy treatments
  • Provide ventilator management, airway care, intubation, extubation, and ventilator support during CPR
  • Perform arterial blood gas collection, analysis, documentation, and interpretation
  • Conduct pulmonary diagnostics including spirometry, peak flow testing, overnight oximetry, EKGs, and Holter monitor setup
  • Assist with bronchoscopy procedures, C-sections, and infant deliveries
  • Perform routine maintenance, quality control, and validation testing on respiratory and blood gas equipment
  • Complete accurate electronic documentation, patient education, and departmental reporting
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and patient safety standards
  • Communicate significant clinical findings and provide complete patient handoff reports

  • Maintain positive and professional communication with patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and leadership
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and sound clinical judgment
  • Prioritize responsibilities effectively in a high-volume healthcare environment
  • Support positive patient experiences and strong interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and organizational standards
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and flexibility to meet departmental needs
