Responsibilities
~2 min readThe City of Austin’s newly created Office of Arts, Culture, Music, and Entertainment (ACME) is committed to fostering a vibrant, creative and progressive ecosystem that celebrates and supports Austin’s artists, musicians, entertainment venues, and cultural institutions. We are looking for a passionate and experienced, cultural and community-focused leader to serve as the Culture & Arts Education Manager at the George Washington Carver Museum, Genealogy & Cultural Center.
This role requires more than just managerial skills – it calls for a committed leader with a strong background in African American and/or Black and Diaspora Afrikan history, arts, and culture. The ideal candidate will be someone with lived experience working alongside diverse communities, with a deep understanding of Black history, arts, and cultural expression. They will have a track record of curating meaningful cultural programs, events and preserving, promoting, and celebrating African American heritage, arts, and creative expression of the community. By cultivating creativity and community engagement, this individual will help ensure the Carver Museum remains a key space for education, cultural expression, and connections.
The ideal candidate possesses a curatorial vision aligned with the Carver Museum’s mission to tell stories about our local community and connect those histories to larger narratives about Blackness. Utilizing best practices for art installation, preservation, and transportation, they have curated culturally relevant and impactful exhibits about the Black experience. As a curious, creative, and compassionate leader, they prioritize building enduring relationships with artists through intentional collaboration and equitable business principles.
We are looking for a servant leader who approaches their work with empathy, compassion, and a commitment to cultural representation. This individual must have experience leading arts or museum programs, developing strategic partnerships with artists, non-profits, and educational institutions, and engaging with diverse stakeholders to foster and sustain a thriving and innovative cultural hub. The selected candidate will undergo a rigorous hiring process that includes stakeholder input to ensure alignment with the Carver Museum, Genealogy, and Cultural Center’s mission and the City’s commitment to preserving, celebrating, and advancing African American history, arts and culture.
