We are hiring a BAW Software Engineer at BCBST!
In this role, you will help design, build, implement, and support a new platform that will replace a critical legacy system supporting an insurance line of business. You'll work closely with an external implementation partner and cross-functional teams to deliver enterprise workflow solutions that drive business operations for a significant portion of our membership. As the team expands its capabilities beyond its traditional technology stack, you'll play a key role in workflow modernization efforts, helping shape technical solutions, develop enterprise integrations, support production environments, and contribute to building long-term expertise in workflow technologies across the organization.
To be successful in this role, in addition to the core job requirements, you'll bring hands-on experience developing and supporting enterprise workflow applications using IBM BAW/BPM, strong technical problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across business and technology teams. You will be a strong candidate for this role if you have experience designing workflow components and reusable solutions, integrating enterprise applications through APIs and messaging technologies, working throughout the full software development lifecycle, and supporting complex production environments. Strong experience with Java/J2EE, JavaScript, SQL, Agile delivery methodologies, and enterprise workflow modernization initiatives is highly valued.
Strong candidates will have:
- IBM BAW Workflow Development: 3+ years of hands-on experience developing, enhancing, and supporting enterprise workflow applications using IBM BPM 8.x and/or IBM Business Automation Workflow (BAW) 24.x or 26.x.
- Workflow Solution Design: Strong expertise designing and implementing workflow components including Processes, Human Services, Coaches, Coach Views, Dashboards, Toolkits, reusable components, and workflow orchestration capabilities.
- Enterprise Integration Development: Proven experience integrating IBM BAW solutions with enterprise applications using REST APIs, SOAP Web Services, JMS/MQ messaging, databases, and stored procedures.
- Full SDLC Participation: Experience supporting requirements analysis, solution design, development, testing, deployment, technical documentation, and production support activities.
- Supporting Technology Stack: Strong programming experience with Java/J2EE, JavaScript, SQL, and enterprise database platforms including SQL Server and DB2. Data modeling experience is also highly valued.
- Production Support & Quality Engineering: Ability to troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, execute unit testing, support system/integration testing, and participate in code reviews.
- Agile Team Collaboration: Experience working directly with customers to refine business requirements while following good practices from the BABOK, collaborating with business analysts, architects, QA teams, and stakeholders in Agile/Scrum delivery environments.
Note:
- This is a remote, work-from-home position, but the final round of interviews will take place on-site in our Chattanooga, TN office.
- The expected work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
- Periodic on-call support responsibilities will be required once the platform is operational.

- →May serve one or more project team roles, such as project lead, business systems analyst, or technical lead, for small to medium efforts or manage phases of medium to large efforts.
- →Maintains technical skill set for software languages, databases, platforms, operating systems, utilities and networks needed to support work assignments.
- →Responds to system failures and performance events by taking appropriate measures to reduce system downtime and eliminate recurrence of problems.
- →Regularly provides guidance and training to less-experienced analysts/programmers.

- Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience required. Equivalent years of experience are determined as one year of technical experience for every year of college requested.
Experience
- 1 year - Experience with information technology concepts, application development methodology, terminology, and standards required
- 3 years - Systems and programming experience required
- 1 year - Expert working knowledge of at least one programming language in use at BCBST.
Skills\Certifications
- Proven skill with information technology in use at BCBST is required
- Proven analysis, design, and coding skills, and demonstrated success in leading large and complex projects
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate technical and/or or complex concepts into information meaningful to project team members and/or business personnel.
- Be organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple tasks with exceptional work ethic.

- Must be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical co-workers
