A MLT/MT is responsible for providing efficient and friendly customer service while collecting blood samples. MT/MLT' must also be knowledgable in basic laboratory and safety protocols.
Expected Duties:
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine laboratory tests and procedures accurately and efficiently.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment, including analyzers and microscopes.
- Prepare and analyze blood, urine, and other specimens following standard protocols.
- Ensure all testing is completed within established time frames and meets quality standards.
- Record and verify test results in the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities.
- Follow all laboratory safety and infection control protocols.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals to address testing inquiries or concerns.
- Be able to explain blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
- Collect blood samples from patients (venipuncture)
- Practice proper patient identification
- Label vials with patient names and dates
- Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient
- Process any and all samples
- Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status
- Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients
- Keep your phlebotomy cart or station well-organized at all times
- Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment
- Perform CLIA waived tests accurately and efficiently
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Certification or eligibility for certification by a recognized accrediting agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT) is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Good problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Prior laboratory experience (internships, externships, or coursework) is a plus but not required.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
- Data entry and computer skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to walk 2 flights of stairs throughout the day
- Ability to successfully draw blood from patients with minimal or no complications
- Empathy and interpersonal skills for working with patients
- Detail-oriented and committed to ensuring patient confidentiality
- Excellent motor skills and the ability to stand for long periods of time
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
