Cancer Support Community (CSC), the largest nonprofit provider of social and emotional support for people affected by cancer, is seeking a Grassroots Engagement Manager, Policy and Advocacy to support its policy and advocacy work at the Federal, State, and Network Partner level. CSC’s mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. The Cancer Policy Institute (CPI) brings together patient advocates and policy experts to ensure that the voices of cancer patients and their loved ones play a central role in federal and state legislative, regulatory, and executive policy making. This individual must have a demonstrated interest in policy and advocacy and will support the policy team in engaging our grassroots and Network Partners in CPI efforts.


JOB SUMMARY:  

Cancer Support Community (CSC)the largest nonprofit provider of social and emotional support for people affected by cancer, is seeking a Grassroots Engagement ManagerPolicy and Advocacy to support its policy and advocacy work at the Federal, State, and Network Partner level. CSC’s mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. The Cancer Policy Institute (CPI) brings together patient advocates and policy experts to ensure that the voices of cancer patients and their loved ones play a central role in federal and state legislative, regulatory, and executive policy making. This individual must have a demonstrated interest in policy and advocacy and will support the policy team in engaging our grassroots and Network Partners in CPI efforts. 

 

Grassroots & Network Partner Engagement and Communication: 

  • Work with the CPI team, Network Council, and CPI Network Partner Advisory Board to get input on policy efforts that are of highest priority for Network Partners, cancer patients and survivors, and their loved ones and caregivers to assist in development and implementation of CSC’s regulatory and legislative agenda 
  • Develop high-quality toolkits and action center communications to ensure Network Partners and CPI grassroots have the tools they need to easily engage in policy efforts 
  • Build and manage relationships with Network Partners, CPI grassroots network members, UM roundtable participants, state agencies, and patient advocacy and community partners 
  • Support and elevate patient, survivor, and caregiver voices through CSC storytelling efforts, ambassador programs, and public testimony 
  • Track and analyze policy developments across all 50 states that are prioritized by our Network Partners, including Medicaid Work Requirements  
  • Build programs to show value to Network Partners of participating in policy efforts, such as responses to assist participants with their state’s Medicaid Work Requirements 
  • Respond to requests and questions from advocates, Network Partners, and interest holders 
  • Interact regularly with CSC donors, partners, and interest holders 
  • Develop and maintain content on the CPI webpages and action center 


EVENT PLANNING, COORDINATION, & ENGAGEMENT: 

  • Support the planning, organization, recruitment, and drafts of materials for CSC policy events including Roundtables, Summits Hill Days, Policy meetings, and webinars. 
  • Engage regularly with CSC Network Partners to organize, instruct, and help manage network activities such as Advocacy in August, NP Advisory Committee, and CSC Hill Day 
  • Represent CSC in policy coalitions, industry events (ASCO, Oncology Society Meetings, etc.), and other organizational events (ALC, All Staff Meetings, etc.) 
  • Engage patients, caregivers, and stakeholders in advocacy activities 


Fundraising and Administrative Tasks: 

  • Help draft CPI funding proposals 
  • Track CPI’s finances and funding progress, working with CPI and Industry relations team to recommend areas of improvement and possible additional funding streams 
  • Assist policy staff with administrative duties 

 

Performs other duties as requested by management 


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate  
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to adhere to tight timetables   
  • Understands Medicaid work requirements and has the ability to explain complex policy issues like drug pricing and 340B to the general public in ways that they can act on those issues 
  • Self-motivated, self-starting, team driven, customer service oriented, and a creative thinker 
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to adapt and respond effectively to diverse audiences  
  • Capable of handling a full range of delegated responsibilities and working independently        
  • Exercise good judgment and display personal initiative in all areas assigned   
  • A proven interest in and commitment to the cancer community  


TECHNICAL SKILLS: 

  • Ability to utilize Better Unite, Zoom Webinar, best practices for hybrid meetings, and other event and publicity software to support the planning, organization, and execution of policy events 
  • Ability to utilize action center software and other programs to make it easy for our grassroots to make their voices heard by their representatives 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite 

 

EDUCATIONBachelor’s degree in a related field (public policy, etc.) required  

EXPERIENCE3 - 5 years of policy and advocacy experience, preferably in health policy  

 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS 


SALARY AND BENEFITS 

Annual salary range is $75,000 - $83,000 Dependent on experience. In addition to a competitive base salary, CSC offers employees access to a generous benefits plan with both contributory and non-contributory programs and plans. 

  

WORK LOCATION 

This position is located in Washington D.C. You may work at CSC’s office in the Anacostia area of Washington, DC on a full-time basis or on a hybrid basis (attend DC meetings and events/in Anacostia office/work from home) schedule in the Washington, DC area.
