About the Role

We are seeking four (4) Board Certified/Board Eligible Psychiatry Physicians to provide on-site clinical and inpatient mental health services to Veterans at the Hampton VA Healthcare System (HVAHS) in Hampton, Virginia. You will deliver all-inclusive psychiatric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department settings, practicing to a standard that meets or exceeds nationally recognized benchmarks established by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Approximately 95% of your time will be devoted to direct patient care, with the remaining 5% dedicated to administrative and quality improvement activities. One provider may be required to work at an alternative location: the Virginia Beach Community Based Outreach Clinic, 244 Clearfield Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.

 

  • Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
  • Coverage includes weekdays, weekends, and federal holidays: a minimum of three (3) psychiatrists on site Monday through Friday, and one (1) psychiatrist on site for weekends and holidays (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM).
  • Call-back coverage and telephone consultation with attending physicians or nurses are required for weekend and holiday evenings; if a call-back is necessary, return to the hospital within one (1) hour. A laptop with remote access to the medical record may be authorized.
  • Monthly call schedules for mental health emergencies are prepared jointly with the VA Chief of Mental Health.

Responsibilities

  • Inpatient Care: Provide inpatient psychiatric care in collaboration with VA Mental Health staff, including admitting, diagnosis, treatment plan development, timely treatment management, seeing ward patients, discharge/transfer, and all required medical record documentation.
  • Outpatient Care: Provide outpatient psychiatric coverage Monday through Friday for approximately 12–15 patients per day per psychiatrist, including new patient referrals, severely mentally ill patients, e-consult evaluation and disposition, post-discharge follow-up (patients seen within 30 days), and history & physicals as required.
  • Weekend/Holiday Coverage: Provide weekend and holiday inpatient psychiatry unit coverage, delivering all-inclusive psychiatric care for up to 40 patients (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM).
  • Assessments & Crisis Care: Conduct diagnostic assessments, medication renewals, suicide risk assessments, and crisis interventions in outpatient and emergency department settings.
  • Supervision: Provide oversight of Residents, Interns, Medical Students, and Advanced Practice Providers; all trainee-administered care is directed by a BC/BE psychiatrist.
  • Documentation: Document all patient services in the VA electronic health record (CPRS); documentation must be accurate, complete, signed, and submitted within 24 hours. Enter prescriptions, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory orders into CPRS.
  • Peer Review: Provide professional psychiatric expertise for peer review of selected cases, including tort claims, patient/family complaints, mental health case reviews, and benefit appeals.
  • Administrative: Participate in quality improvement activities, staff meetings (up to 2 hours per week), QA/QI documentation, and patient safety compliance and reporting.

Requirements

  • MD or DO with Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Psychiatry (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology).
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Candidates who have ever had a license restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily surrendered pending action, or denied upon application cannot be considered.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or equivalency.
  • Current DEA registration and National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.
  • Current CME in compliance with national/medical association minimum standards.
  • Must successfully complete VA credentialing and privileging (VetPro) in accordance with VHA Handbook 1100.20 and VHA Directive 1100.21 prior to providing services.
  • Must provide proof of immunizations/screenings current within the past year, including TB testing (TST or IGRA), MMR and varicella immunity, Tdap, annual influenza vaccination, and Hepatitis B series with bloodborne pathogen training.
  • Must complete all VA-mandated training, including quarterly BLS and annual courses such as suicide risk management, Military Sexual Trauma (MST) for medical providers, EHR, privacy/HIPAA, and patient safety.
  • Must not appear on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities.
  • Verifiable evidence of all education and training, including explanation of any gaps in educational history.
