Assistant Professor - Clinical/Counseling Psychology

The Department of Psychology at Utah State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Clinical or Counseling Health Psychology with a strong background in Clinical Neuroscience whose research examines the intersection of psychological processes, health, and neuroscience. The successful candidate will join our APA-accredited Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology Ph.D. specialization and contribute to our new undergraduate Behavioral Neuroscience major.

 

We are particularly interested in scholars investigating the neural mechanisms and correlates of clinical and health conditions, as well as interventions designed to improve health and functioning. Relevant areas may include, but are not limited to, chronic health conditions, developmental neuroscience, aging and neurodegenerative disease, neuropsychiatric conditions, neurorehabilitation, neuropsychology, and related areas. We welcome a broad range of methodological approaches across clinical, health, and affective neuroscience, including work with brain stimulation methods, neuroimaging, neurofeedback, and basic research with animal models. We encourage applications from candidates whose work complements existing strengths across Psychology and the broader college.

 

This is a tenure-track, nine-month academic year position anticipated to begin in August 2027. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a nationally visible, externally funded program of research; publish and disseminate high-quality scholarship; mentor doctoral students in the Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology specialization; contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction, including the Behavioral Neuroscience curriculum; and participate in department, program, university, and professional service.

• Ph.D. in Clinical, Counseling, or Combined Psychology from an APA- or CPA-accredited program or international equivalent by the start date;
• Strong record of research productivity relevant to clinical/health neuroscience;
• Evidence of potential for an externally funded program of research;
• Ability to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship.

• Research expertise that complements or extends existing strengths in Psychology and the broader college and contributes to academic programming in health psychology;
• Potential for interdisciplinary collaboration in areas such as lifespan neuroscience, health and aging, intervention science, or health technology;
• Demonstrated potential to engage undergraduate and graduate students in research, professional, clinical, community-engaged, or other experiential opportunities that support their academic and career development;
• Licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist in Utah.

The Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology specialization is an APA-accredited doctoral program with a 50-year history of training health service psychologists. The program follows a scientist-practitioner model and has longstanding strengths in health psychology and neuropsychology. Faculty maintain active programs of research and provide doctoral training across clinical and counseling psychology, with students receiving research, teaching, and applied training experiences designed to prepare them for careers in academic, research, and health-service settings. Clinical training and research are supported by the interdisciplinary facilities of the Sorenson Center for Clinical Excellence. The program welcomes colleagues who value collaborative doctoral training and want to contribute to an active community of scholars and educators.

 

The Department of Psychology at Utah State University is a research-intensive department within the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, with strengths spanning basic, translational, and applied psychological science. The department is entering a period of significant faculty growth, with five tenure-track faculty hires planned across four searches in 2026–27.

 

The department includes more than 30 faculty and offers doctoral training through four Ph.D. specializations: Behavior Analysis, Brain and Cognition, Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology, and School Psychology. Department faculty also contribute to USU’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Neuroscience. At the undergraduate level, the department offers B.S. degrees in Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience, as well as an award-winning online Psychology program. The department also offers a distance-learning M.Ed. in Professional School Counseling.

 

Faculty maintain active programs of research supported by federal and other external funding and collaborate extensively within the department, across the college, and throughout the university. Existing collaborations connect Psychology faculty with colleagues in areas including biology, human development and family studies, special education and rehabilitation counseling, nursing, speech and hearing sciences, kinesiology, economics, mathematics and statistics, sociology, and natural resources. The department values research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and creates opportunities for collaboration in areas such as behavioral and mental health, neuroscience, health and aging, intervention science, and emerging health technologies.
