The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Information Science, with a starting date of August 1, 2027. We seek candidates whose research bridges mathematical foundations and modern aspects of quantum information science, potentially including algebraic and geometric quantization, quantum probability, quantum computing, quantum algorithms for PDEs, and quantum mirror symmetry.

This position is inherently interdisciplinary. We seek candidates who demonstrate potential for strong synergies with the department’s existing research strengths in pure and applied mathematics; see https://artsci.usu.edu/math-stats/research/. Candidates should also be able to partner broadly with researchers across campus, such as those in physics, chemistry, engineering, and computing.

This position is a full-time, nine-month (academic year) appointment with a 50%-45%-5% division of responsibilities among research, teaching, and service. The hire will ultimately be expected to increase external funding, expand collaborative reach, help build curricular strength in quantum mathematics, and demonstrate a clear commitment to student success and student experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. More specific expectations include the following.

  • →Research: develop an independent and externally funded research program at the interface of mathematics and quantum information science.
  • →Teaching: deliver core undergraduate (1000-4000 level) and graduate (5000-6000 level) mathematics courses, and develop advanced courses related to quantum mathematics; see the USU General Catalog at https://catalog.usu.edu/, and search for courses having “MATH” as a prefix.  In these courses, the candidate will be expected to contribute to high-quality teaching and meaningful educational opportunities for students.
  • →Mentorship: supervise graduate students (MS and PhD) and undergraduate students in research projects involving mathematics and quantum information science; these mentorship experiences are considered key experiential learning opportunities for students.
  • →Collaboration: establish and maintain synergies across campus (e.g. physics, chemistry, engineering, and computing), and contribute to campus-level quantum information science initiatives.
  • →Service: departmental, college, and professional service consistent with expectations for a tenure-track faculty member.
