The Orthopedic Physical Therapy Resident ("the Resident") position is a 1-year position that allows the Resident to obtain focused didactic and clinical education in the area of Orthopedic Physical Therapy while providing the community with high-quality clinical services. The Resident will accumulate at least 300 hours of education, 150 hours of 1:1 clinical mentoring and 1500 hours of clinical practice by the completion of the program. The Resident is expected to meet the departmental clinical standards for outcomes, productivity and professional behavior.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates competency and professionalism in conducting a clinical examination, establishing a physical therapy diagnosis and developing a plan of care to address person-centered goals.
  • Demonstrates safe and effective implementation of therapeutic interventions including but not limited to therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, patient education and modalities
  • Demonstrates effective documentation of all clinical encounters
  • Demonstrate appropriate supervision of Physical Therapist Assistants, physical therapy students and departmental volunteers
  • Attends all assigned educational opportunities and passes written, practical and live patient examinations with a grade of > or equal to 80%
  • Demonstrates effective teaching in laboratory and clinical settings

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Education: Graduate from an accredited Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program
  • Licensure: Current NYS Physical Therapy license or is eligible
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Experience: New graduates. Completes the application process via RF-PTCAS and is recommended for the position by program director or designate.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred
  • Good written and oral communication skills preferred.
  • Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move/lift patients with assistance if necessary
  • Ability to provide manual therapy to patients including joint mobilizations, soft tissue mobilizations, and deep tissue massage
  • Ability to lift/move 45lb weight for patient use

Location and Travel Requirements:

  • Location: Onsite. Based out of Cayuga Wellness Center at 310 Taughannock Blvd, Ithaca, NY 14850. May be scheduled at other area locations including Brentwood (Ithaca) and Cortland as needed to support department and patient needs.
  • Shift: Part-Time 30 Hours Per Week Orthopedic Physical Therapy Resident. Days/Evenings FLEX. Anticipated schedule during clinic hours 7a-6p M-Th, 7a-4p F. Weekend "on call" coverage ~3-4x/year.
  • Travel Requirements: 0%-10% local travel expected to support Outpatient Therapy needs at various area locations.

Pay Range Disclosure:

  • Standard Rate of $37.12 per hour plus benefits
