Overview: The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for a Chemist II supporting the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Under general supervision, the Chemist II will be responsible for assisting with a government-based postmortem toxicology program. Duties will include working to obtain, review, and analyze data to verify instrumentation used for the analysis of postmortem specimens.

 

This position provides critical support to the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (NC OCME) through a diverse range of responsibilities. This role is primarily responsible for conducting LC/MS instrument analysis of single-analyte and multi-analyte quantifications for instrument verification. In addition to hands-on laboratory work, this position plays a pivotal role in supporting the forensic toxicology lab through extensive comparative data analysis.

Requirements

· Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or Forensic Science required and 5 years of relevant laboratory and/ or instrumentation work experience.

· Graduate degree in forensic science, chemistry, toxicology, laboratory sciences or related field preferred and 2 years of relevant work experience.

· Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

· Ability to communicate in a positive and professional manner.

· Ability to prioritize activities when under tight deadlines.

· Strong technical and analytical skills should include spreadsheet management and database management.

· Demonstrated ability to work well independently and within teams.

· Knowledge of the principles, practice, and current developments in the field of analytical chemistry and/ or analytical toxicology.

· Demonstrated experience in independently performing and recording complex standardized laboratory tests, procedures and data analysis

· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Zoom

· Proficiency in Tracefinder preferred

 

Responsibilities

· Assists with forensic testing using GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and related instrumentation.

· Performs laboratory data analysis.

· Maintains a secure chain-of-custody of any biological evidence.

· Receive, track, and store body fluids, tissue, and other substances for testing in the forensic laboratory setting as requested.

· Contributes to maintenance of supplies and inventory, including the preparation of buffers and standards as requested.
