Data Engineer (Azure | Data Governance)

We are seeking a Data Engineer / Information Engineer with strong expertise in Azure Data Services and Microsoft Purview, focused on data governance, lineage, and enterprise data engineering. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, governance, and compliance, working across cross-functional teams to build scalable, secure, and high-quality data solutions. Key Responsibilities Data Governance & Metadata Management (50%) Design and implement Microsoft Purview solutions Establish data lineage, cataloguing, and governance frameworks Configure data classification, labelling, and compliance policies Integrate Purview with enterprise data platforms Drive data discovery, quality, and security initiatives Document governance frameworks and train stakeholders Data Engineering (30%) Build and optimise scalable data pipelines Work with large, complex datasets (structured & unstructured) Implement data lake & warehouse solutions Apply Medallion Architecture principles Develop metadata-driven pipelines & CI/CD processes Ensure data quality, validation, and performance tuning BI & Analytics Support (20%) Enable reporting through clean, modelled datasets Support data visualisation and analytics teams Prepare datasets for advanced analytics & modelling Junior / Graduate Consideration We will consider juniors ONLY if they have: Azure certifications (e.g., DP-203, DP-900) Hands-on project experience (internships, GitHub, etc.) Demonstrated understanding of: Medallion Architecture Kimball Methodology Who Should NOT Apply Candidates without Azure data experience Pure BI developers with no data engineering Entry-level candidates with only theory and no practical exposure Candidates not based in Johannesburg Requirements MUST-HAVE REQUIREMENTS (Non-Negotiable) Strong Azure Data Engineering experience (ADF, Synapse, Data Lake, etc.) Experience with Microsoft Purview (data governance, lineage, cataloguing) Solid understanding of: Medallion Architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold) Kimball Methodology (data warehousing) Proven ability to build data pipelines and data models Strong SQL and data transformation skills Applications without the above will not be considered Tech & Skills Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Data Lake Microsoft Purview (essential) SQL (advanced) Data Modelling (Star Schema, Relational) Data Warehousing & Lakehouse design CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps preferred) What Success Looks Like Strong ownership of data pipelines and governance frameworks High-quality, reliable, and well-documented data solutions Seamless collaboration across data, BI, and IT teams
