Applicants must demonstrate the following: 

  • Master's degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, or similar field, from an accredited institution. Candidates in the process of completing a Master's degree will be considered, but degree must be conferred before August 19, 2027
  • Professional journalism experience in a reporting or producer role, or similar, for a broadcast or digital news platform. 
  • Active engagement with new technologies and skill development.
  • College or university-level teaching experience or experience teaching or mentoring in a professional setting. (In person and/or online)            
  • Current agenda or potential to create research, scholarship or continued journalism work.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with students, colleagues, production teams, community partners, and/or industry professionals. 
  • Evidence of effective engagement, or potential to engage, with a diverse student body.
  • Teaching or professional experience that includes working with a diverse student body or leading groups of people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring. 
  • Professional-level proficiency in video editing, with the potential to work and teach in audio such as podcasting.
  • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment and a culturally responsive teaching style. 
  • Classroom management and curriculum development experience. 
  • Spanish-language fluency that would allow the candidate to support students in culturally relevant reporting and content creation.
  • PhD in Journalism or related field conferred before August 19, 2027.

The Department of Journalism at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Broadcast and Video Journalism at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will bring extended professional experience in broadcast and/or digital news production. They will be comfortable with production and post-production workflows and using tools for nonlinear video editing. We seek a candidate with demonstrated expertise in live studio broadcasts or digital journalism production and experience in reporting or producing, who will stay current with emerging technologies and platforms and continue to develop professional expertise.

In this faculty role, the person will contribute to teaching, mentoring, and curriculum development in journalism and media production. All tenure-track faculty are expected to contribute to the field through an active scholarly, creative, and/or professional journalism agenda. The candidate should demonstrate experience supporting diverse students with attention to career development through teaching, mentoring, journalism/media production, research/creative activity, professional work, and/or service.

The successful candidate may teach courses in areas such as multimedia digital production, as-live broadcast production, writing for speaking, and special topics in video and audio journalism. Our program includes a Spanish-Language Journalism minor, and the ability to support students reporting in Spanish is a plus. These teaching areas may be discussed later in the search process.

In addition to teaching, responsibilities include weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, assessing student learning, service to the department, college, and university, and contributing to curriculum development and outreach in broadcast and digital journalism. The position may require teaching during weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or online. Candidates will be evaluated based on the college and department standards for recommending tenure and promotion.

Discuss the relationship to the Department of Journalism's mission and the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Describe your current and/or planned program of research, creative activity, and/or professional work.
