San Diego State University is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Locksmith to maintain, repair, and install campus locking and access control systems. This role supports the security and functionality of university facilities through preventive maintenance, emergency response, and technical expertise in mechanical and electronic security systems.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Renovation, Preventive Maintenance & Emergency Response
- →Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, and repairs to maximize system reliability and minimize disruptions.
- →Support renovation and capital improvement projects by installing security hardware, reviewing plans, estimating materials, and coordinating with contractors.
- →Respond to emergency service requests involving locks, doors, and access control systems to restore building security and operations.
- →Maintenance & Repair
- →Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair manual and electronic locking systems, door hardware, automatic operators, safes, gates, and other security devices.
- →Diagnose system failures and restore equipment to safe operation while ensuring compliance with building, fire, and life-safety codes.
- →Access Control & Security Systems
- →Install, program, maintain, and troubleshoot electronic access control systems and locking devices.
- →Maintain master key systems, key records, computerized inventories, and access control documentation.
What We Offer

- This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. The abilities of this position normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a locksmith’s apprenticeship program.
Requirements
~2 min read- Ability to lift and transport equipment, material and supplies up to 50 pounds without assistance (in excess of 50 pounds with assistance).
- Thorough knowledge of the methods and materials and equipment used in the locksmith trade, including complex access control systems.
- Thorough knowledge of all types of locks, fastening devices and related hardware.
- Working knowledge of electrical locking and security systems and devices.
- Experience maintaining computerized inventory and master locking systems records.
