We are currently seeking experienced candidates for the position of Paralegal (Hybrid). The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $115,440 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This is a 3/2 hybrid position, where the paralegal will work in-person at the Chancellor’s Office, Long Beach three days per week, and remotely two days per week. The incumbent is required to work in-person on certain dates at management’s discretion.

Paralegal

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Paralegal (Hybrid) to be responsible for assisting Office of General Counsel attorneys, the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff and the Paralegal Supervisor in their professional work involving the full range of legal issues confronting the CSU.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Paralegal Supervisor, the Paralegal (Hybrid) will:

-Assist the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, University and Litigation Counsel, Assistant Vice Chancellor & Chief of Staff, and the Paralegal Supervisor in their efforts to provide legal services to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor’s Office and all 22 universities.

-Assist Office of General Counsel attorneys with various specialty areas within the office -- e.g., Public Records Act requests, unlawful detainers, stop notice administration, subpoena review, student loan bankruptcy proceedings, small claims court filing and appearances, Pitchess motions, improper use of the CSU name, Title IX, Legislation, emergency health and safety, athletics, and database management.

-Provide paralegal support for appeals, hearings, arbitrations and trials. This includes preparing materials, exhibits and filings with the proper agency.

-Conduct research; draft documents; assist with gathering, organizing, and analyzing documents and other information; prepare charts, reports, graphs, summaries, and PowerPoint presentations; and respond to various requests.

-Knowledge of federal, state, and local court rules, including but not limited to court calendaring and e-filing/e-service.

-Respond or coordinate the Office of General Counsel’s response to specialty-related Public Act Requests, and coordinate or assist campuses in their responses. This includes providing guidance to Chancellor’s Office employees and campus clients.

-Work with the Chancellor’s Office Records Access Officer on requests as appropriate.

-Manage and maintain relevant databases.

-Interact with various constituents within the Office of General Counsel, CSU, and the public.

-Work with, delegate assignments, and provide feedback for support staff.

-Other duties as assigned.

The paralegal is a non-exempt employee and is required to work under the supervision of the Paralegal Supervisor, attorneys and the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff with a significant amount of independence. Using their own judgment and knowledge, they are expected to determine the most appropriate approach to the subject assigned and allocate time and resources to the completion of the required work accordingly.

The paralegal reports to the Paralegal Supervisor, who is responsible for their evaluation and jointly supervises their work with the attorneys. They are expected to contribute to the mission of the office and may, from time to time, be asked to assume responsibilities outside of their principal functions.

Requirements

This position requires:

-The paralegal is required to have a Bachelor’s degree and a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program.

-Minimum seven years of recent and relevant paralegal experience in California.

-Litigation experience is required, and trial experience is strongly preferred.

-Experience with NetDocs, eCounsel, Westlaw and e-discovery is strongly preferred.

-Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required.

-Public agency experience is a plus.

-Higher education experience is a plus.

-Some travel may be required.
