Check out this opportunity below!\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Connecticut Department of Correction is looking to hire a Head Nurse at the York Correctional Institution in East Lyme, CT.\r\n\r\nPOSITION DETAILS\r\nThis is a full-time, 40 hour per week position on first shift. Schedule is Monday-Friday between 6:00am and 2:00pm.\r\n\r\n\r\nThis Correctional Head Nurse position supports the Department of Correction’s Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) program by overseeing detox nursing care, coordinating nursing staff, and collaborating with Nursing and Addiction Services leadership to support patient care and program operations.\r\n\r\nDuties include, but are not limited to:\r\n\r\n Contributes to nursing operational standards by providing feedback to Health Services Nursing and Addiction Services leadership; supports implementation of productivity, quality, and service standards; identifies and helps resolve system challenges.\r\n Serves as primary liaison for internal and external multidisciplinary teams; participates in and reports on program activities during interdisciplinary meetings.\r\n Identifies offender needs through professional engagement and coordination with custody, health services, addiction services, and community partners.\r\n Collaborates with Nursing Leadership to maintain and update nursing guidelines, practices, and procedures.\r\n Ensures quality of care by applying nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and agency policies; evaluates health outcomes and recommends improvements.\r\n Oversees detox nursing care by monitoring staff performance and clinical practices.\r\n Provides information and support to offenders and staff; participates in the grievance response process.\r\n Protects confidentiality and ensures secure handling of offender health information.\r\n Audits documentation and records to ensure accurate, complete, and compliant patient care records.\r\n Prepares reports, data summaries, and documentation required by leadership.\r\n Manages detox nursing supply inventory, including oversight of MOUD medication ordering and tracking (e.g., Methadone, Suboxone).\r\n Assigns caseloads and provides oversight to Detox Nurses.\r\n Performs other related duties as assigned.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nABOUT US\r\nOur Mission: The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction shall strive to be a global leader in progressive correctional practices and partnered re-entry initiatives to support responsive evidence-based practices aligned to law-abiding and accountable behaviors. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction facility this class is accountable for the supervision and administration of an assigned nursing, mental health or related specialty unit including the direction and coordination of staff in order to ensure that the highest quality of nursing and/or mental health care is provided for the inmate population.\r\n
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
HEALTH SERVICES:�\r\n\r\n\r\n Leads planning of care and implementation of nursing process;�\r\n Coordinates nursing and/or mental health unit workflow;�\r\n Determines priorities;�\r\n Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work;�\r\n Establishes and maintains unit procedures;�\r\n Identifies staff development needs;�\r\n Provides staff training and assistance;�\r\n Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations;�\r\n Ensures controlled drugs are properly stored, administered and ordered;�\r\n Leads professional and paraprofessional nursing staff in provision of inmate general and mental health care;�\r\n Instructs staff regarding policies and procedures;�\r\n Maintains and promotes standards of nursing;�\r\n Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;�\r\n May participate in interdisciplinary meetings;�\r\n May make recommendations on policies or standards;�\r\n May prepare reports and correspondence;�\r\n May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist mental health and correction staff in emergencies;�\r\n Performs related duties as required.�\r\n\r\n\r\nINFECTION CONTROL:�\r\n\r\n\r\n Leads planning and implementation of infection control services for correctional inmates and individuals re-entering the community in order to protect the health and safety of inmates, staff and the public;�\r\n Assures quality performance in implementation of infection control program by contracted health care provider;�\r\n Provides education and training to inmates including infection prevention and control;�\r\n Monitors and ensures quality care through observation and evaluation;�\r\n Maintains records and makes reports;�\r\n May develop infection prevention curriculum and educational materials for inmate education;�\r\n May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist mental health and correction staff in emergencies;�\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
\r\n Considerable knowledge of\r\n \r\n and ability to independently apply nursing principles, techniques and standards;�\r\n medication, their actions, interactions, uses and side effects;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n general and mental health conditions and treatment interventions through utilization of assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome, identification, health planning, implementation and re-evaluation;�\r\n and sensitivity to cultural and socio-economic differences;�\r\n emergency and operating room nursing procedures and techniques;�\r\n teaching, counseling and evaluation principles and techniques;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Considerable\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;�\r\n oral and written communication skills;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n act as a role model to health care staff;�\r\n interview;�\r\n develop curricula;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Supervisory ability.\r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
A Bachelor's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n Experience with serving as a liaison among internal and external multidisciplinary teams and reporting on program activities during interdisciplinary meetings.\r\n Experience with identifying patient needs and coordinating services with custody, health services, addiction services, and community partners.\r\n Experience with reviewing and updating nursing guidelines, practices, and procedures in collaboration with nursing leadership.\r\n Experience with applying nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and agency policies to evaluate patient care outcomes and recommend improvements.\r\n Experience with overseeing detoxification nursing care, including monitoring staff performance and clinical practices.\r\n Experience with providing information and support to patients and staff and participating in the grievance response process.\r\n Experience with maintaining confidentiality and security of patient health information.\r\n Experience with auditing patient care documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable requirements.\r\n Experience with preparing reports, data summaries, and supporting documentation for leadership.\r\n Experience with managing detoxification nursing supply inventory, including oversight of ordering and tracking medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), such as methadone and Suboxone.\r\n Experience with assigning caseloads and overseeing the work of detoxification nurses.\r\n\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current license or temporary permit as a Registered Nurse in Connecticut OR hold a Multistate or Compact Registered Nurse license.\r\n Candidates may be required to have experience working with adolescents or in women's health or mental health care.�\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n\r\n
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for permanent appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess general good health and retain sufficient stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity necessary to perform all duties of the class. Incumbents are required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain inmates; may have some exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive inmates; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
