The results of the evaluations are used to determine the most appropriate level of care�and level of housing.\r\n Other assessments performed evaluate a client's cognitive level of functioning, judgement related to safety and cooking tasks, money management, social adjustment, and problem solving.�\r\n Work with clients that are�severely and chronically mentally ill and many with co-occurring substance use disorders and complex needs including trauma, homelessness, legal issues and who struggle with being stable and independent.�\r\n Write lengthy reports with scores and recommendations within a timely manner and communicate to the client, provider and make available in the medical record\r\n Facilitate skill building groups and therapeutic recreational activities.�\r\n Collaborate with the multidisciplinary clinical teams and outside housing, treatment, and hospital providers.\r\n Other related duties.\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n ABOUT US�\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n DMHAS is a health care agency whose mission is to promote the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self-sufficiency in those we serve.�\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n CMHC is an urban community mental health center with an exceptional 50-year tradition of serving individuals with serious mental illness and/or addiction.� Founded in 1966, CMHC is a partnership between DHMAS and the Yale Department of Psychiatry.� Each year over 4,000 people receive a variety of recovery-oriented services at CMHC and its satellite clinics.\r\n \r\n \r\n CMHC is nationally recognized for its scientific research into the causes and treatment of mental illness and addiction.� The Abraham Ribicoff Research Facilities include multiple research programs in a variety of areas.� CMHC is also a major training site for individuals pursuing careers in mental health fields including psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, and pastoral care.\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n PLEASE NOTE:\r\n \r\n A comprehensive medical examination, including a drug screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.\r\n All state employees must adhere to�Connecticut's Policy for a Drug Free Workplace.\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state facility this class is accountable for providing professional occupational therapy services.\r\n
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
CLINICAL:\r\n\r\n Selects, plans, administers and implements occupational therapy programs for training of individuals with physical disabilities and/or an intellectual disability;\r\n Administers individual and group instructions to individuals in various occupational therapies including but not limited to activities of daily living, independent living skills, sensorimotor skills and performance components, psychosocial skill and performance components, therapeutic adaptations and specialized assessments;\r\n Determines and carries out treatment and activities for individuals consistent with physician prescription;\r\n Assesses individuals educational needs;\r\n Organizes new projects and methods;\r\n Serves as a member of the treatment team;\r\n Consults with supervisor, physicians and other professionals regarding individual reactions, progress and treatment plans;\r\n Recommends changes in individuals treatment;\r\n Participates in training programs for professional and paraprofessional staff and students/interns gaining clinical experience;\r\n Attends and participates in workshops and conferences;\r\n Instructs and demonstrates to individuals and parents treatments to be carried on in a treatment center and at home;\r\n Makes adaptive equipment;\r\n Maintains records and prepares reports on individuals care and administrative matters;\r\n Coordinates occupational therapy services with other disciplines such as physical, speech and rehabilitative therapies;\r\n Orders, requisitions and distributes supplies and materials;\r\n Coordinates efforts of volunteers;\r\n May escort individuals on trips into community;\r\n May perform duties in individuals home or community settings;\r\n May act as supervisor in their absence;�\r\n May act as a consultant, advisor or resource person to other staff, programs or units;\r\n May attend conferences, individuals study meetings and clinics;\r\n May maintain inventory;\r\n May serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional (QIDP);\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\nCONSULTING:\r\n\r\n Provides consultative services to public and private agencies in an assigned region of state or on a statewide basis with emphasis on pediatrics;\r\n Instructs professionals, paraprofessionals, individuals and family members in appropriate way to carry out therapeutic program and encourages self-care at home;\r\n Develops, supervises and operates therapeutic clinics or programs in an assigned area of state;\r\n Assists in development of educational materials and procedural manuals;\r\n Assists in evaluation of services and procedures being purchased by state or being rendered by state run facilities;\r\n Prepares and presents educational material for in-service training programs;\r\n Assists in recruitment and orientation of professional staff;\r\n Prepares growth and development tests;\r\n Assists in planning and participates in special research studies;\r\n Prepares reports of activities and maintains individuals records;\r\n May provide direct service to individuals;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
CLINICAL:\r\n\r\n Considerable knowledge of\r\n \r\n principles and practices of occupational therapy;\r\n anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, neurology, neuroanatomy and individual and group dynamics as applied to occupational therapy;\r\n adaptive equipment and its proper application;\r\n \r\n \r\n Considerable\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Skill in application of occupational therapy techniques;\r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n gain interest, cooperation and confidence of individuals;\r\n utilize computer software.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\nCONSULTING:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Considerable knowledge of\r\n \r\n principles and practices of occupational therapy with emphasis on pediatrics;\r\n adaptive equipment and its proper application;\r\n \r\n \r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations;\r\n concepts and practices of public health;\r\n \r\n \r\n Considerable\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to utilize computer software.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain licensure as an Occupational Therapist issued by the Connecticut State Department of Public Health in accordance with the applicable Connecticut General Statutes.\r\n
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n\r\n Possession of an Occupational Therapist license issued by the Department of Health\r\n Experience working with the severely mentally ill and co-occurring substance use population for assessments, evaluations and�skill building\r\n Experience working with a multidisciplinary team on�an outpatient psychiatric unit�\r\n Experience facilitating groups and�supervising�Occupational Therapist�students\r\n Experience writing�Occupational Therapist�reports and other�documentation by deadlines\r\n\r\n\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of American Sign Language in certain designated positions.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury and to moderately disagreeable conditions while providing treatment to individuals.\r\n
