Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Chesterfield Health District provides public health services to the residents of Chesterfield County, Powhatan County, and the City of Colonial Heights. This position is based in the Chesterfield Health Department.

The Chesterfield Health District is seeking a Certified Nurse Practitioner Senior to join our public health team. This position offers an opportunity to provide direct patient care while supporting our broader mission of improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve. The Certified Nurse Practitioner Senior provides comprehensive patient care with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Responsibilities include conducting physical examinations, assessing and diagnosing patient conditions, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing and implementing individualized plans of care.
The Certified Nurse Practitioner Senior may also:
• Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, within the scope of applicable laws and regulations.
• Perform or direct nursing assessments and clinical procedures.
• Order and/or perform laboratory testing and obtain clinical measurements.
• Develop, implement, and monitor patient care plans.
• Administer medications and provide ongoing case management.
• Collaborate with public health professionals and community partners to support disease prevention, health promotion, and improved health outcomes.
This position requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Practitioner in Virginia.

Wage employees are subject to the following conditions of employment:
• Wage employees serve at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority.
• Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
• Wage employees are not covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act. Therefore, they are not eligible for benefits which are provided to salaried employees, such as leave credits, holiday pay, insurance, access to the grievance procedure, etc.
• Wage employees are paid only for the hours they actually work.
• Virginia state law currently requires that agencies not permit wage employees to work in excess of 29 hours per week on average over the course of a year. Wage employees may not work for VDH beyond 1,500 hours during the period of May 1 – April 30 of the following year (the Standard Measurement Period).
• Once a wage employee works the maximum of 1,500 hours during the Standard Measurement Period, the employee may be rehired as a wage employee of VDH only after the next Standard Measurement Period has begun.
• Wage employees are eligible to apply for all classified positions for which recruitment has been initiated, including those limited to State Employees Only.
• If a wage employee becomes employed in a classified position, he/she will be eligible to purchase retirement credit for the time worked as a wage employee.
• Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
Minimum Qualifications
Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Practitioner in Virginia required
Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology
Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients
Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation
Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs
CPR/BLS certification
Additional Considerations
Prior public health or community health with significant clinical experience in prenatal, STI, family planning, pediatrics and family practice preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology
