Senior Project Engineer (PE-2) – Drainage Engineering
Location: Mesa, AZ
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview
At EPS Group, we don’t just work on drainage projects; we solve complex challenges that protect communities, improve infrastructure, and create lasting impact. Our drainage team is a collaborative, forward-thinking group that values trust, ownership, and innovation. We work hard, support each other, and deliver high-quality solutions for our clients, while making time to recharge and enjoy the work we do.

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Technical Engineer to lead our Drainage and Flood Control efforts. In this role, you will serve as a technical subject matter expert, driving the design and analysis of complex stormwater management systems, flood mitigation infrastructure, and open-channel hydraulics.

You will bridge the gap between high-level engineering analysis and practical design solutions, ensuring our projects not only meet regulatory standards but also protect communities and infrastructure from flood risks. This is an ideal position for a technical leader who thrives on solving difficult hydraulic problems and mentoring junior staff.

Core Responsibilities
•    Perform complex hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, including 1D and 2D stormwater modeling using software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS (1D/2D), FLO-2D, or similar.
•    Conduct floodplain mapping, delineation, and regulatory compliance reviews.
•    Prepare and review technical drainage reports, CLOMR/LOMR submittals, and FEMA flood map revisions.
•    Utilize ArcGIS/QGIS for data analysis, mapping, and modeling support.
•    Design stormwater and drainage facility designs, such as channels, culverts detention basins, storm drain systems, and erosion protection.
•    Prepare and review technical drainage reports, CLOMR/LOMR submittals, and FEMA flood map revisions.
•    Oversee the technical quality of drainage deliverables, ensuring compliance with local municipal standards, state DOT requirements, and federal (FEMA/USACE) regulations.
•    Coordinate directly with clients, regulatory agencies, and sub-consultants to resolve permitting issues and technical challenges.
•    Conduct rigorous QA/QC reviews of calculations, models, and design drawings prepared by junior staff.
•    Coordinate with project managers to support deliverables on schedule and within budget.
•    Serve as a technical mentor to Engineer-in-Training (EIT) staff and junior engineers, providing guidance on modeling techniques and design best practices.
•    Assist Project Manager in scope development, fee estimation, and proposal writing for drainage-focused pursuits.

Qualifications
•    Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field. Master’s degree in Hydraulics, Hydrology, or Water Resources and/or Certified Floodplain Manager designation preferred.
•    Current Professional Engineer license in Arizona.
•    6+ years of progressive experience in drainage engineering, stormwater management, and flood control.
•    Advanced proficiency in H&H modeling software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS (1D/2D), FLO-2D, or similar.
•    Strong working knowledge of ArcGIS/QGIS for watershed delineation and spatial analysis.
•    Deep understanding of FEMA NFIP regulations, CLOMR/LOMR processes, and local stormwater design manuals.
•    Ability to explain complex hydraulic concepts to non-technical stakeholders and clients clearly.
•    Strong eye for grading constraints and constructability issues within drainage designs.

Physical Requirements
•    Required to stand, walk, and sit.
•    The position may require a visit to project sites occasionally.
•    The position requires a normal range of hearing.
•    The employee must be able to lift 40 lbs. occasionally.
•    Requires prolonged sitting with 15% of the time spent bending and reaching.
•    Must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
•    Noise levels are consistent with a standard office environment.

Perks & Benefits
•    Health, life, 401(k), dental and vision insurance
•    Short-term, long-term disability insurance and leave
•    Paid holidays
•    Paid Time Off
•    Bereavement leave
•    Quarterly bonus program and straight time overtime

•    Hybrid work options and flexible schedule opportunities.
