The Field Service Engineer (FSE) is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing high-end microscopy systems (e.g. confocal microscopes) at customer sites. The role ensures optimal system performance and customer satisfaction through timely service delivery, technical expertise, and proactive support.
- Install and commission advanced microscopy systems at customer sites
- Perform preventive maintenance and system calibrations
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, vacuum, and software-related issues
- Troubleshoot complex system failures and implement corrective actions
- Execute upgrades and modifications to existing systems
- Provide technical support and training to customers (scientists, lab technicians, engineers)
- Act as the primary technical contact for assigned accounts
- Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction through professional service delivery
- Maintain detailed service documentation and reports
- Manage service schedules, parts inventory, and travel planning
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards
- Collaborate with internal teams (R&D, technical support, sales) to resolve issues
- Support remote diagnostics and digital service tools
- Identify recurring issues and suggest product/service improvements
- Participate in technical training to stay current with new technologies
- Share knowledge and best practices within the service organization
Requirements

Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Physics or Applied Physics
Mechatronics or related field
2–5+ years of experience in field service, preferably with:
Confocal microscopy
Analytical instruments or lab equipment
Strong knowledge of:
Electronics and electromechanical systems
Imaging systems and optics
Software System set up
Ability to read schematics and technical manuals
Proficiency in troubleshooting hardware and software systems
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
Strong communication and customer-facing abilities
Ability to work independently in remote environments
Willingness to travel extensively (up to 70–80%)
Valid driver’s license
Ability to work in laboratory and cleanroom environments
Good knowledge of German and / or French and English
