PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is responsible for the independent processing of clinical specimens, the performance of complex analytical testing, and the accurate reporting of results to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The MLS performs only those tests authorized by the Laboratory Director, ensuring all procedures align with their advanced education, clinical training, and technical competencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSBILITIES
  • Follows laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Adhere to the lab’s QC policies, document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follow the lab’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the lab’s defined acceptable levels of performance.
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problem or immediately notify the lab manager/chief technologist.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab’s established performance specifications.
  • Perform other duties of a similar level or responsibility as assigned by leadership.
                       
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, or medical laboratory Technology or, clinical laboratory science or chemical, physical or biological science.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience and/or clinical training in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Exercises independent clinical judgment to correlate laboratory findings with patient conditions and ensure diagnostic accuracy.
  • Demonstrates high situational adaptability and ability to collaborate with others to ensure seamless laboratory operations and optimal patient care.
  • Current licensure in the state of Louisiana
  • Must be proficient with the ability to navigate Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and standard office software.
  • BLS, Louisiana License, and ASCP required upon hire
