Knife Grinder

Hood Plywood, a division of Hood Industries Inc., is seeking a reliable and motivated Knife Grinder for our Beaumont, MS plywood facility.  This role is responsible for maintaining the performance and precision of our cutting equipment, ensuring all knives and blades are sharpened, balanced, and properly maintained.  The ideal candidate has mechanical aptitude, experience with grinding equipment, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.

 Key Responsibilities: 

• Operate and maintain knife grinding equipment to sharpen, grind, and maintain sawmill knives, chipper knives, and related cutting tools.
• Inspect blades regularly for wear, damage, and defects; perform adjustments or replacements as needed.
• Follow established grinding procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy, and quality.
• Monitor blade performance and make recommendations to improve efficiency and longevity.
• Maintain accurate records of blade maintenance, repairs, and replacements.
• Work closely with mill personnel to coordinate workflow and prioritize maintenance needs.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues and perform basic maintenance on grinding machinery.
• Adhere to all safety policies and procedures to promote a safe work environment.
• Stay informed on industry best practices and advancements in blade maintenance and grinding techniques.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous experience as a knife grinder, machinist, saw filer, or in a similar industrial role.
• Strong knowledge of knife grinding equipment, techniques, and safety practices.
• Ability to operate and maintain industrial grinding machinery.
• High attention to detail and commitment to precision work.
• Strong problem-solving and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Willingness to work flexible shifts, including overtime if needed 

Physical Requirements:  

• Perform tasks such as walking, climbing steps, pushing, pulling, maintaining balance, kneeling, squatting, grasping, and standing for long periods.
• Willing able to work in a hot, cold, noisy, industrial environment. 
• Operate heavy industrial grinding equipment
• Reach above shoulders and perform repetitive motions.
• Climb stairs and ladders.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. throughout the work shift.

Pay Range: $20.37 - $22.95/per hour
