Primary Objective of Position:
The Program Coordinator of Veteran Services will develop and implement supportive services and programming for veteran residents living in a permanent supportive housing community operated by Jamboree Housing Corporation, independently of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Jamboree is seeking a person to work 40 hours a week coordinating services, resources, and activities that help residents maintain stable housing using a Housing First, trauma-informed approach.
Major Areas of Accountability:
- Assess the needs of residents through interest surveys and personal interviews, and help develop individualized, voluntary service plans focused on housing stability and retention.
- Plan and direct on-site resident meetings, social activities, and educational and wellness programs for adult veteran residents.
- Identify community resources that help residents maintain their housing, such as veteran benefits, low-cost health insurance, behavioral health, food programs, employment, and government entitlements, and assist residents with applications.
- Coordinate with the VA and other veteran-serving agencies for healthcare, benefits, and resources while operating the program separately from the VA.
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed, and connect residents to behavioral health and emergency resources.
- Facilitate and supervise virtual programs.
- Develop a calendar and articles for the monthly community newsletter.
- Maintain, develop, and foster positive professional working relationships with property managers, veteran-serving partners, community partners, and volunteers.
- Maintain organization of physical space and administrative paperwork.
- Assist residents in using the on-site computer lab.
- Outreach to the community by means of automated calls, flyers, and going door to door.
- Refer residents to appropriate agencies and encourage and support follow-through.
- Collect and report data regarding resident and volunteer programs, including documentation in HMIS, Coordinated Entry (CES), or similar systems.
- Recruit and supervise volunteers as needed
- Other duties as assigned.
Level of Education, Experience and Skill Set:
- 2 years of experience in case management, supportive housing, or homeless/social services preferred.
- Knowledge of veteran populations, military culture, and VA benefits and resources strongly preferred
- Experience with low-income individuals and vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness, mental health conditions, or substance use, is strongly preferred
- Excellent communication skills
- Over 21 years of age
- Ability to interact in a culturally diverse community
- Familiarity with Housing First and trauma-informed care principles
- Experience documenting in HMIS, Coordinated Entry (CES), or similar data systems is a plus
- Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- A.A. Degree, or pursuing a B.A. degree or equivalent; B.A. in social work, human services, psychology, or a related field preferred
- Job includes some evening and weekend hours and travel throughout California
Physical Demands:
This position is fully on-site. The Program Coordinator of Veteran Services is required to be present and actively working at the assigned site during all scheduled working hours. Remote work is not available for this role. The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers to handle or feel. The employee is required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, twist, lean, move from one location to another and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close and far vision. Ability to operate a computer keyboard, and lift files and reports. Exposure to glare from a computer.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must be able to lift 25 lbs and travel via automobile 80% and/or plane 10%.
Work Environment:
The work environment will usually be in a recreational room or common area. The noise level is usually moderate but will vary depending on the activity participating
in.
