QA Engineer (IJ Kotlin Plugin)

The IntelliJ Kotlin Plugin team builds the core support for Kotlin within JetBrains IDEs, covering vital features like highlighting, refactorings, and advanced coding assistance. As the Kotlin ecosystem evolves, our tooling must remain robust, accurate, and performant. We are focusing on systematically expanding test coverage across both existing functionality and emerging areas. 

In this role, you will influence the stability of core developer workflows. This is not a role where you just run through a static checklist. You will have the autonomy to spot automation opportunities, design maintainable test scenarios, and shape how we test highly complex developer tools. You will collaborate directly with developers, investigating tricky edge cases and preventing regressions before they reach our community.

Day to day, you will:

• →Collaborate with developers on exploratory testing of new and modified IDE functionality.
• →Investigate and pinpoint bugs, report findings in our tracker, and perform regression testing.
• →Design maintainable test scenarios and decide which ones should be automated.
• →Write and maintain automated tests in Kotlin to expand coverage of IDE functionality.
• →Analyze existing test coverage, identify critical gaps, and help prioritize future automation efforts.
• →Participate in product planning to assess technical risks and plan QA work for proposed changes.
• →Improve test coverage for Kotlin-related functionality in IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and other priority areas of Kotlin tooling.

• The ability to read and write clean code to create test examples, investigate failures, and build automated tests.
• Proficiency in Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented programming language.
• Experience designing test scenarios and deciding what should be automated versus tested manually.
• Experience working with bug trackers, version control, and continuous integration systems.
• Familiarity with Java technologies, frameworks, and build tools like Maven or Gradle.
• The ability to analyze complex technical behaviors, such as static analysis, compilers, or language tooling.
