Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
Job Summary: The Academic Advisor I provides guidance to University students on academic progress, courses, University resources, etc. Identifies courses to be completed in upcoming semesters. Explains University and College policies. May teach compass course as needed.
Additional Department Summary: Performs a number of essential duties within the Barefield College of Arts and Sciences that help support the overall goal of student success. Facilitates the transition from high school to the university experience through Bama Bound programming, assisting students with major exploration, developing a multi-semester plan toward graduation, and supporting various retention initiatives within the BCAS Student Services Center.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to work effectively with and understand the interests of students with various backgrounds and experiences. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Public speaking skills. Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet and/or database management, etc. Good planning, coordination, and organization skills. Good analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree (completed or in progress). Experience working in an academic support, teaching, recruitment, and/or admissions position.
