This role offers the opportunity to shape the core combat experience of AAA action games from concept through implementation. You will create, prototype, and refine combat mechanics, characters, abilities, behaviors, and encounters that feel engaging and responsive. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will bring gameplay concepts to life through scripting, animation, audio, visual effects, and level design tools. You will contribute to defining the direction and goals of the combat design team while operating with a high degree of autonomy. - Create, pitch, prototype, and refine gameplay ideas for core combat systems, moment-to-moment mechanics, combat characters, abilities, behaviors, and encounters across different gameplay contexts.
- Implement melee-focused combatant characters, including animations, behaviors, state machines, behavior trees, visual and sound effects, and combat encounters.
- Design arena layouts and pacing using available level design tools and scripting systems to create compelling and engaging combat experiences.
- Create design documents, content briefs, system outlines, and other documentation to clearly communicate gameplay concepts and requirements to partner teams.
- Collaborate closely with multiple disciplines throughout development, ensuring the right stakeholders are involved, aligned, and informed.
- Follow industry trends, emerging game genres, evolving design techniques, and advancements in audiovisual quality to continuously improve gameplay experiences.
- Work with a high degree of ownership, initiative, and autonomy while contributing to the objectives and evolution of the combat design team.
Requirements
~1 min read- 5+ years of experience in AAA game production for console and PC platforms.
- 2+ years of experience shipping third-person melee combat titles in AI, combat, or systems design roles.
- Working proficiency with at least one game editor; experience with multiple game engines is considered an asset.
- Exceptional ability to conceptualize, pitch, and implement gameplay systems and features using a variety of tools, technologies, and visual scripting languages.
- Strong understanding of creative workflows and game development processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. English proficiency is required due to regular collaboration with international colleagues, partners, and stakeholders outside Québec.
- Proven ability to create compelling, engaging, and enjoyable gameplay, scenarios, and combat encounters.
- Experience with visual and/or text-based scripting to support avatar behaviors, combat actions, and hero state-machine interactions.
- Self-motivated, hardworking, collaborative, and comfortable both giving and receiving constructive feedback.
- Strong passion for combat-oriented games, including third-person action-adventure titles and combat-focused RPGs.
- Familiarity with Lua scripting is an asset.
- Understanding of action-adventure game design, player psychology, and emerging industry trends is an asset.
- Knowledge of Maya, 3DS Max, or a similar 3D package is an asset.
- Familiarity with JIRA, Confluence, and Perforce/P4V is an asset.
