Role Purpose
The purpose of a heavy equipment mechanic is to inspect, maintain, and repair various types of large machinery used in construction. This includes diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical issues, performing routine maintenance and repairs, and ensuring that equipment is safe and in optimal working condition. The heavy equipment mechanic plays a crucial role in keeping these machines running efficiently and effectively, ensuring that projects and operations can be completed on time and without interruptions.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of diesel and hydraulic systems, as well as experience with welding and electrical systems. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential.
*Must have experience working with heavy machinery- Caterpillar, Mack Trucks, Chevrolet and Ford Trucks
Heavy Equipment Mechanic Duties
- Perform routine maintenance on heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, excavators, skid steers, asphalt pavers, off-road trucks, etc.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical problems.
- Repair and replace damaged or malfunctioning parts.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed.
- Perform inspections to ensure equipment meets safety standards.
- Collaborate with other mechanics and equipment operators.
- Stay updated on new technology and advancements in heavy equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- May perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic Requirements
- Must have experience working with heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment issues.
- Familiarity with computer diagnostic software.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Physical strength and stamina.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Environmental Conditions
- Weather conditions such as temperature, moisture and other conditions have a significant impact on the job. This must be tolerated, with or without reasonable accommodations, being exposed frequently to extreme weather conditions.
- There are high noise levels and significant vibration associated with this position. This may be caused by the truck and equipment and jobsite noise.
- The is also exposure to cement, asphalt, dust, diesel fuel and other substances which may be toxic, cause burns or be explosive.
- Requires working indoors in non-controlled environmental conditions.
- Requires working in a closed vehicle or equipment.
Physical Demands
- Requires you to walk, stand, and sit.
- Requires use of hands and fingers to handle and feel.
- Required to climb, balance, kneel, crouch and crawl.
- Requires use of hearing and smell.
- Requires ability to lift up to 110 pounds.
- Requires the ability to push and pull items with 100 pounds of force.
- Requires ability to identify and distinguish colors visually.
