The Per Diem Hospital-Based Doula will join the efforts to improve birth outcomes and patient experiences for individuals delivering at Mount Sinai Health System by integrating doula services into the continuum of care for our obstetric patients. 

The Per Diem Hospital-Based Doula will provide ongoing, non-medical emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant and birthing individuals and their families during the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.

  1. Provide continuous, non-medical labor support throughout labor and delivery, including reassurance, grounding techniques, emotional support, physical comfort measures, and facilitation of communication between patients and the care team
  2. Provide prenatal support through in-person or virtual visits, including development of birth plans, childbirth education, and emotional support for pregnant individuals
  3. Provide postpartum support to birthing individuals, including breastmilk feeding support, facilitation of skin-to-skin contact, early bonding, and newborn integration
  4. Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers and other members of the multidisciplinary care team
  5. Participate in clinical huddles and care coordination activities, reporting concerns and escalating issues as appropriate to ensure patient safety and compliance
  6. Maintain flexibility to meet program needs across shifts and clinical settings
  7. Demonstrate professionalism, cultural humility, and responsiveness while working within a grant-funded program
  8. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the departmental mission

Requirements

Required

  • Experienced doula with demonstrated expertise in prenatal, labor, and postpartum support 

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Proof of completion of a birth and/or postpartum doula training of at least 30 hours from Doula of North America (DONA) or equivalent recognized organization (copy of original certificate required) 

  • Short professional bio 

  • Proof of at least 3 hours of breastfeeding training 

  • Active professional liability insurance, maintained annually 

  • Two professional references 

  • Strong communication skills 

  • Commitment to person-centered care and culturally responsive support 

  • Basic computer literacy 

 

Experience Requirements                                                                                                                

Preferred

  • Experience in Childbirth education, labor support or breastfeeding education and support 

  • Certified Lactation Counselor certification 

  • Minimum of 7 attended births or postpartum families supported or equivalent
