The Role

Database Operations is responsible for the deployment and maintenance of the database layer that Palantir’s products depend on. As an engineer on the Database Operations team, you will be involved in the architecture and design of our databases from a deployment and observability perspective. Once a database is deployed, we build and maintain the automations and observability that ensure the databases meet our reliability and availability objectives in a wide variety of deployment environments. We also respond to critical production issues powering some of the most impactful use cases and customers in the world.

Build and maintain software that automates the routine maintenance tasks involved in deploying and running production databases

Participate in regular on-call rotations

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and remediate issues that arise in the stability and reliability of production database systems

Participate in post-incident reviews and take ownership of follow up actions

Manage and execute large scale migrations of the fleet of databases we run

Collaborate closely with customer facing teams when responding to incidents or when assisting them in setting up new installations of databases

Work with database engineering teams and infrastructure teams to build resilient and highly available database systems

Continuously invest in documentation, metrics, monitors and other troubleshooting tools

Build deep expertise and experience in production systems (Kubernetes, cloud environments, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, etc.) and share that knowledge amongst the team

Strong sense of ownership in ambiguous environments. You are not afraid to step in to take ownership and drive important outcomes when traditional lines of ownership are unclear.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate and empathize with a variety of individuals in a high pressure environment. You will be part of high stakes incidents, and you will be expected to keep calm and work effectively in such situations.

Strong curiosity and motivation to learn new technology and concepts. We are constantly encountering new technologies and systems, and you will be expected to quickly understand them and incorporate them into your daily work.

Ability to work with a high level of autonomy and responsibility in a rapidly changing environment with dynamic objectives and iteration.

First principles thinking. You have a deep desire to thoroughly understand what you are working on instead of just applying band aid fixes, and are not afraid to ask questions to gain understanding.

Engineering background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics or similar field.

Experience writing code a variety of programmin languages such as Java, Python, and Go, as part of a past role or personal projects.

Experience with cloud and deployment technologies such as Kubernetes, Helm, AWS, GCP, Azure, and Openshift.

Experience with database technologies such as Cassandra, Elasticsearch and Kafka.

A solid foundation in Linux and web service fundamentals.

Familiarity with observability tools such as Grafana and Prometheus.

Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to iterate quickly with teammates and incorporate feedback.
