Education Outreach and Training Specialist

Experienced educators, do you wish to strengthen the quality of education overseas? Teacher trainers in Uganda invite you to work alongside them!

Uganda’s education system faces persistent challenges that directly impact teaching quality and learner outcomes. Culturally and historically, Uganda’s education system has been shaped by rigid, exam-oriented teaching. English remains the dominant medium of instruction, often creating barriers for learners in multilingual communities. Another pressing issue is teacher shortages. Moreover, a significant number of teachers lack the minimum professional qualifications required by the Ministry of Education and Sports. This gap in teacher training leads to reliance on traditional and rote learning methods, which hinder critical thinking, creativity, and long-term retention of knowledge.

As an Education Outreach and Training Specialist, you will collaborate with local educators at teacher training colleges, outreach coordinating centers, and demonstration schools to develop engaging student-centered classroom instruction techniques. Alongside your colleagues, you will contribute to Uganda’s broader education reform goals.

Bachelor's degree in literacy education or relevant field.
AND
Three or more years of experience in literacy education.

The Volunteers will live independently in urban and peri-urban areas of Uganda. Housing will have grid electricity or solar power and running water, but these utilities are unreliable. Mobile internet is widely available, with sufficient speed for video calls.

Support the professional development of new or young teachers in Uganda, making a positive impact on the country’s education for generations to come.
Gain marketable professional skills in instructional design, digital learning, and international development.
Develop lasting relationships with colleagues and community members.

Facilitate professional development workshops for teachers that emphasize evidence-based literacy instruction.
Train teachers on general teaching methods and student-centered approaches.
Conduct teacher training on the integration of engaging technology and digital tools into classroom instruction.
Participate in weekly outreach programs.
Collaborate with college tutors to support the design and production of low-cost, context-relevant teaching aids.
Enhance community-based outreach to bridge gaps between colleges and rural schools.
Assist in organizing and improving the college library to increase access to reading and teaching materials.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as a book club or after-school sports.

After a two-week orientation on topics including in-country safety and Uganda’s education system, you will move to a peri-urban community where you will collaborate with the teacher training college staff to assess the local needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.

Peace Corps/Uganda will equip you with language resources for the local language in your community, and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
