English Teacher

Students and teachers across Madagascar are eager to strengthen their English skills with a native speaker.

Madagascar faces ongoing challenges in providing consistent, high-quality English instruction. Large class sizes, limited teaching materials, and a shortage of trained English educators make it difficult for students to build strong communication skills. Strong English proficiency opens doors to academic advancement, international programs and scholarships, and employment opportunities in fields such as tourism, technology, and health. Investing in English education is critical for the future of Malagasy students. External support is required to help address gaps in knowledge and strengthen English learning nationwide.

As an English Teacher, you will collaborate with school staff to provide meaningful English learning experiences that complement the curriculum. Alongside educators, you will develop interactive lessons, encourage classroom participation, and build students’ confidence using English. By sharing teaching strategies and resources, you will also strengthen the teachers’ capacities to deliver effective English lessons. Your efforts will contribute to stronger professional networks for educators and improved English outcomes nationwide.

Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

Volunteers live in rural and semi-urban communities across Madagascar’s Itasy, Vakinankaratra, Boeny, Alaotra Mangoro, Matsiatra Ambony, Vatovavy, and Analanjirofo regions. Housing is modest and may include inconsistent electricity or water access. Daily commutes consist of walking or biking to the work site or markets.

Develop practical skills in second-language instruction to effectively support students from different backgrounds.

Earn Peace Corps/Madagascar’s TEFL certification with 120+ training hours and two years of supervised classroom practice.

Build Malagasy language proficiency and cultural understanding in a way only possible through extended, immersive living in the community.

Plan and teach student-centered lessons aligned with the national curriculum.

Encourage English practice beyond the classroom through informal conversations and extracurricular activities, such as English clubs, essay competitions, and spelling bees.

Organize English-focused activities during school breaks, including student leadership workshops.

Support teacher communities of practice by sharing classroom strategies, practical tools, and instructional resources.

Engage in school or community initiatives that strengthen collaboration and partnerships between school staff and families.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as supporting school improvement projects.

As an English Teacher, you will be trained on effective instructional methods, lesson planning, and large classroom management techniques. Peace Corps/Madagascar will teach you the Malagasy language to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. You will also receive language resources to support your learning.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to a rural or peri-urban community where you will collaborate with staff at a middle school, high school, or university to identify learning needs and develop activities that support English learning.
