The Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation is seeking a GIS Foundation Specialist to support the delivery of assured and trusted Foundation Geospatial data, services and products across Defence.

Working under general direction within a structured and governed Enterprise GIS environment, the successful candidate will contribute to geospatial data production, maintenance, quality assurance and cartographic outputs supporting Defence operational and strategic requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform geospatial data production, capture, and maintenance activities in accordance with Defence standards and specifications.
  • Conduct quality assurance and validation of spatial data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Produce cartographic products and geospatial outputs to meet defined requirements.
  • Support the maintenance and management of Foundation Geospatial datasets within enterprise systems.
  • Follow established workflows, processes, and standards for geospatial data production.
  • Assist in resolving data quality issues using standard tools and methodologies.
  • Contribute to documentation, including quality reports and procedural outputs.
  • Support geospatial capability outcomes through accurate and timely data production.
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS data production, capture, and quality assurance within structured environments.
  • Relevant vocational or tertiary qualification in geospatial science, GIS, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in GIS tools (e.g. ArcGIS/SOCET GXP) for feature extraction (2D and 3D), editing, and data management.
  • Understanding of working with structured or complex data schemas and specifications.
  • Experience in geospatial data quality assurance and validation processes.
  • Ability to produce cartographic and geospatial outputs to defined standards and specifications.
  • Understanding of geospatial standards, data governance, and quality assurance practices.
  • Good stereo acuity may be required to support geomatic/photogrammetry workflows and geospatial imaging systems.

The Foundation Geospatial Branch produces authoritative foundation geospatial data for Defence activities, including standardised maps, imagery, elevation and feature datasets essential for planning and operations.

The branch maintains the accuracy, accessibility and integrity of these products while supporting the sustainment and continuous improvement of Defence enterprise geospatial capabilities.

  1. Geospatial Data Production and GIS Technical Skills (30%)
    Demonstrated experience in geospatial data capture, production, editing, and maintenance using GIS tools such as ArcGIS, SOCET GXP, or equivalent. Ability to work with structured data schemas and deliver outputs to defined specifications and standards.
  2. Quality Assurance and Data Integrity (25%)
    Demonstrated experience in geospatial data quality assurance, validation, and data management practices, including an understanding of data standards and the ability to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of geospatial datasets.
  3. Cartographic and Foundation Geospatial Product Delivery (20%)
    Demonstrated ability to produce cartographic products and geospatial outputs that meet operational, technical, and presentation requirements, while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and quality.
  4. Communication, Teamwork and Delivery Capability (15%)
    Demonstrated ability to work effectively under general direction, follow established procedures, communicate with stakeholders, and collaborate within a team to deliver outputs within agreed timelines and quality requirements.
  5. Relevant Qualifications, Defence Experience and Security Requirements (10%)
    Relevant vocational or tertiary qualifications in GIS, geospatial science, or a related discipline, together with experience in Defence, intelligence, or government environments and the ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance and DISA.
