Job Summary
Taurus Power and Controls - a Pacific Northern Environmental LLC Company, is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Technician who thrives in a fast-paced, team environment and has the ability to provide exceptional service to our company, clients, and employees.
Pacific Northern Environmental, LLC consists of six divisions; Advanced Electrical Technologies (AET), Taurus Power and Controls (TTPC), Tauras Power Services (TPS) Cowlitz Clean Sweep (CCS), Pacific Northern Environmental Construction (PNEC), and WasteXpress Environmental (WXE). Together, we specialize in commercial and petroleum construction, industrial and commercial electrical, industrial cleaning, and hazardous waste disposal. PNE LLC is a multi-state organization with operating offices in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Hawaii. In addition, we have multiple job sites across the US.
Since 1985, Taurus has been designing control systems, automating tasks, and fabricating control panels for industrial, municipal, and commercial customers-on time and on budget. Taurus is a NETA Accredited Company that offers full service, third party, independent testing for all electrically powered systems and equipment. Being a 24/7 field service company remains at the core of what we do. We have expertise in a wide array of systems and industries, whether it’s servicing projects we developed, or systems built by others.
The Instrumentation & Controls Technician is responsible for acceptance and maintenance testing of power distribution equipment and operation of the test equipment needed to perform the job.
Education and Experience Qualifications
Education:
- Technical/associate’s degree in Instrumentation, Automation, or related field
- Equivalent professional experience in the related field
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
Required Skill:
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation, electrical systems, and industrial control panels.
- Ability to read and understand P&IDs.
- Ability to start-up project specific instruments.
- Understanding of PLC I/O schematics, relay logic, and signal flow
- Understanding of motor control / VFD circuits.
- Experience with current versions of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe.
- High attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with flexibility
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Team oriented, with ability to work independently under general supervision
Desired Skill:
- Programming experience with PLC Platforms: Allen Bradley, Siemens, SQ D, GE.
- Programming experience with HMI/SCADA Platforms: Allen Bradley, Aveva, Ignition.
- Programming experience with VFDs: Allen Bradley, ABB, Yaskawa, Eaton, SQ D.
- Familiarity with communication networks (Ethernet, Modbus, etc.).
- Experience in the Water/Wastewater industry.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Instrumentation & Controls Technician possessing the education and experience listed above performs the following:
Technical Services (in the field)
- Ability to travel up to 30% of the time to job sites (mostly located in the Pacific Northwest).
- Perform start-up and testing services on Instrumentation, PLC’s, VFD’s and other industrial equipment
- Identify problems as they arise and troubleshoot failure in the above-mentioned items
- Ability to work independently when required
- Flexibility in working hours required: work is typically 7am-4pm (subject to change) during the week. After hours and weekend work as required by customer. Overtime hours available.
- Have reliable transportation to travel to and from office or customer’s site. A Company vehicle provided after (1) one year of service.
- Flexibility to travel to out of area jobs for up to a two-week duration. Most of our work is local but occasionally work takes place at a customer’s site within Oregon, Washington or Idaho.
- Provide onsite training on instrumentation and control components to customers
- Minor PLC code modifications during start-up and commissioning
- Provide occasional onsite troubleshooting and service calls as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Technical Services (office)
- Collaborate with engineering and project management teams to clarify requirements and tasks.
- Assist with the creation of instrumentation submittals and O&Ms (Operation and Maintenance manuals).
- Assist in selecting instrumentation and the development of the instrument index
- Complete and maintain detailed records of instrument calibration and test forms
- Receive and track instrumentation through the shop
- Power up, calibrate, and test instrumentation components in the shop.
- Conduct point-to-point and power up testing of industrial control panels.
- Complete documentation of control panel testing and redline control drawings as needed
- Demonstrate proper operation of industrial control panels to visiting customers during factory acceptance testing.
- Complete and maintain documentation from field testing (I/O checkout forms, loop verification forms, operational readiness test forms, performance acceptance test forms).
- Other duties as assigned
Control Panel Fabrication (as needed)
- Dimension and layout of back panels and enclosures
- Mounting components to back panels and enclosures
- Routing and bundling of wire and cables neatly to meet wiring standards
- Troubleshoot panels as needed to eliminate wiring errors and component malfunctions
- Maintain red line drawing mark-ups of changes required during fabrication
- Communicate red line changes to Engineer or Team Leader for revision prior to completion
- Communicate effectively with all team members, leads, builders, engineers and the Project Manager
- The ability to meet deadlines under pressure
- A high standard of quality and attention to detail
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
The candidate must possess and be adaptable to the following physical abilities and working conditions:
- Move about the jobsite as needed.
- Move work related equipment up to 50lbs.
- Remain in a stationary position for long periods of time.
- Operate various technological devices, including but not limited to a computer.
- Occasionally ascend/descend ladders and/or stairs.
