About the Role
~1 min readWe're hiring a Design Engineer to sit across our design and engineering teams. This person will build, own, and maintain our design system — working across Figma and React to design and ship design at a production standard. We're excited about this role — you'll be working directly with the Heads and Directors of Design and Technology to shape it from the ground up.
The role is biased toward design. You should have strong design sensibility — you care deeply about typography, spacing, interaction quality, and the details that compound into how a product feels. You also need to be able to build what you design in production-quality React.
We are not looking for a design system designer without engineering experience. We are not looking for an engineer without design experience. We are looking for someone with design system experience who can do both.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Build, own, and maintain the design system as a coded React component library (Storybook, tokens, documentation)
- →Design and build UI in both Figma and code — working in real-time collaboration with the design and engineering teams
- →Set up and manage a contribution process for the design system so other teams can adopt and extend it
- →Set up, document, and maintain components to a production standard
- →Work with the engineering team to implement the design system across products
- →Build and maintain roadmaps for rolling the design system into the production application
- →Produce tooling for validating designs in the pipeline — ensuring what's built matches what's designed
- →Prototype ideas quickly in code so the team can validate directions before committing engineering resource
- →Ensure consistency and quality across products by establishing and enforcing component standards
- →Contribute to design reviews, evaluating work against the system and the platform
- →Use AI tools as part of your workflow — to accelerate prototyping, explore variations, and augment your output without replacing craft
- A portfolio or personal site is required — we want to see how you think, not just what you've shipped
- Strong design skills — layout, typography, colour, interaction design, motion
- Comfortable leading design decisions in Figma and defending them
- Production-level React and TypeScript — you write clean, maintainable component code, not just prototypes
- Proven design system experience — you've built, contributed to, or maintained a system at component-library level (Storybook, design tokens, documentation)
- An understanding of accessibility, cross-browser consistency, and performance as non-negotiable parts of quality
- Proactive — you spot inconsistencies, flag them, and fix them without being asked
- Comfortable operating across two teams — you're not waiting for briefs, you're embedded in the work and shaping it
