Crisis Line Counselor

About the Role

SAVE is seeking compassionate, mission-driven individuals to join our Crisis Response Team as temporary Crisis Line Counselors. In this role, you'll serve as a lifeline — the first voice a survivor of domestic violence hears when they reach out for help. You'll provide immediate crisis intervention, safety planning, and advocacy to survivors and their children, while working in close partnership with law enforcement, hospitals, and community-based organizations.

Position Details

This is a temporary position with an expected duration of 60 days or less, subject to change based on agency need and budget. Hours range from 8–40 per week. All shifts are evenings, overnights, and/or weekends. Benefits are not included.

What You'll Do

• Staff the SAVE Crisis Line and respond to calls and texts with empathy, urgency, and confidentiality.
• Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, and advocacy to domestic violence survivors and their children.
• Assess client needs and appropriateness for Safe House placement.
• Connect callers with agency and community resources; advocate on their behalf with service providers.
• Collaborate with law enforcement, hospitals, and community-based agencies.
• Maintain accurate records in ETO and contribute to monthly statistical reporting.
• Support site security, emergency transportation, and overall program operations.

What You Bring

• Completion of 40-hour domestic violence certification training (certificate required) — or willingness to complete state-mandated training.
• Coursework in social work, psychology, or a related field, OR at least 2 years of related experience.
• At least 6 months of experience working with domestic violence issues.
• Working knowledge of community social services and resources.
• Comfort working in a crisis-oriented environment and with individuals navigating mental health or substance use challenges.
• Cultural competency and the ability to work with diverse populations.
• Bilingual/bicultural candidates strongly encouraged to apply.
• Valid California driver's license, insurance, and reliable vehicle access.
• Must pass a background check.
• Experience with law enforcement, criminal justice, or residential settings is a plus.
