Product Designer

SteerBridge is seeking a Product Designer to join our Experience Design team supporting MDC and the continued development of AICES, the Artificial Intelligence Claims Evaluation System.

AICES supports complex disability claims and medical evaluation workflows. The platform helps claims reviewers, medical providers, and administrators organize information, review supporting evidence, evaluate system-generated findings, and complete review actions with clarity and accountability.

In this role, you will create high-fidelity UI prototypes in Figma, help maintain and extend our design system, and translate research findings, claims review workflows, and technical requirements into clear, production-ready experiences that support informed human review.

You will collaborate closely with a senior product designer who provides day-to-day direction, design critique, and mentorship. You will also work with UX researchers, engineers, product stakeholders, and subject-matter experts in claims and medical evaluation.

• Claims intake and information organization.

Your designs will help users understand where information comes from, what the system has identified, and when review or correction is needed. Interfaces must make uncertainty, exceptions, and human review actions clear.

  Create high-fidelity, interactive prototypes in Figma, translating wireframes, user flows, research findings, and requirements into polished, developer-ready interfaces.

  Design workflows for claims intake, evidence review, medical evaluation, and administrative oversight.

  Partner with UX researchers and claims and medical evaluation subject-matter experts to understand user needs and translate validated workflows into product designs.

  Support interaction design and information architecture decisions for complex, evidence-rich applications.

  Maintain and extend the team’s design system by using established components, tokens, and patterns correctly and proposing new patterns when needed.

  Execute assigned work under the direction of the senior product designer and track progress through Jira.

  Manage concurrent design tasks, estimate effort, and prioritize work across sprints.

  Document handoff specifications, including interaction details, expected behaviors, states, and edge cases.

  Perform design QA on implemented features to verify alignment with Figma specifications and intended behavior.

  Collaborate with engineers, product stakeholders, researchers, and subject-matter experts to ensure designs are feasible, consistent, accessible, and aligned with user needs.

  Participate in design reviews and critique sessions, communicate design rationale, and incorporate feedback into iterations.

  Refine designs based on usability testing, technical constraints, stakeholder feedback, and evolving operational requirements.

  Visualize concepts early so product and engineering teams can evaluate potential solutions before development.

• Ability to meet the background investigation and access requirements applicable to the project.

• Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field, or equivalent relevant work experience.

• A portfolio demonstrating strong UI craft, design system work, and the ability to organize complex information and design multi-step user workflows.

• Ability to present a previously designed user flow during the interview process and explain design decisions, constraints, and tradeoffs.

• Strong proficiency in Figma, including components, variants, auto layout, and interactive prototyping.

• Solid understanding of design systems and how components, tokens, and patterns are used and extended.

• Strong foundational UI skills, including typography, visual hierarchy, layout, spacing, and color.

• Experience translating wireframes, workflows, or requirements into high-fidelity, developer-ready prototypes.

• Working knowledge of Section 508 requirements and WCAG accessibility standards as applied to UI design.

• Comfort using Jira or a similar ticketing or Agile tool to manage assigned work.

• Strong communication skills and openness to direction, critique, and mentorship.

• Two to four years of professional experience in UI or product design. Exceptional early-career candidates with strong portfolios will also be considered.

• Experience designing evidence-rich applications, case management tools, enterprise software, decision-support tools, or other complex interfaces.

• Experience presenting source information, system-generated outputs, review status, exceptions, or permissions clearly.

• Working knowledge of UX principles, including usability heuristics, information architecture, and interaction design.

• Working knowledge of HTML and CSS sufficient to understand implementation feasibility and communicate effectively with engineers.

• Experience contributing to or maintaining a design system component library.

• Experience participating in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.

• Experience supporting VA, federal health, benefits, disability claims, medical evaluation, or other government programs.

• Basic motion or interaction design skills.

• Experience using AI-assisted design, prototyping, or development tools such as Claude, ChatGPT/Codex, or comparable platforms.

• Ability to use rapid prototyping techniques to demonstrate interactions and product concepts beyond static screens.
