~1 min read

We’re looking for an experienced, commercially minded Financial Controller to join The Part-Time Finance People and support a portfolio of ambitious SME clients across St Albans and the surrounding areas. This is a hands-on, client-facing role where you’ll take ownership of the finance function, provide meaningful commercial insight, and help business owners make informed, confident decisions. You’ll work flexibly across a range of growing businesses, delivering high-value financial support where it matters most.

You’re an experienced Financial Controller who enjoys working closely with SMEs and becoming a trusted part of the leadership team. You combine strong technical expertise with a practical, solutions-focused approach and are confident communicating financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Ideally, you’re already operating on a self-employed or contract basis, available for a minimum of 2 days per week, and able to start at short notice.

  • Strong experience preparing management accounts and financial reporting

  • Expertise in balance sheet reconciliations and month-end processes

  • Proven experience in cashflow forecasting and profitability analysis

  • Strong systems knowledge, particularly Xero (experience with Sage50 and/or QuickBooks beneficial)

  • A track record of implementing and improving financial controls and processes

  • Commercial awareness with a proactive, business-focused mindset

  • Experience supporting year-end processes and external accountants

  • Advanced Excel skills including PivotTables, SUMIFs, and financial analysis

  • Confidence presenting financial information to senior stakeholders and business owners

  • Fully qualified (ACCA/CIMA/ACA/ICAEW) or QBE with significant relevant experience

  • Rate: £35 per hour

  • Location: St Albans and surrounding areas

  • Hours: 2–3 days per week

At The Part-Time Finance People, we’re passionate about helping business owners build more profitable, scalable, and enjoyable businesses.

We go beyond traditional finance support by delivering practical, commercially focused advice that helps SMEs improve cash flow, increase profitability, and make better strategic decisions.

We’re proud to foster a diverse, inclusive, and supportive working environment where different perspectives are valued and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

  • Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years’ UK-based experience as a Financial Controller

  • We are unable to offer sponsorship for overseas candidates
