Software Engineer 2 (MLOps)

Toast is looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join the AI team. The ideal candidate has a solid track record in the product-oriented development and deployment of machine learning models. As an Machine Learning Engineer II, you will work with a team of machine learning engineers, data scientists, partner engineering team and product managers to build machine learning pipelines and deploy models for product lines. 

• Collaborate with machine learning engineers and data scientists to design and build scalable ML and agentic AI pipelines, develop APIs, and implement microservices with a strong focus on latency, reliability, and performance
• Drive engineering excellence by enforcing best practices in version control, code reviews, testing, and documentation, contributing to a high-quality and maintainable codebase
• Stay up to date with emerging tools, technologies, and best practices across ML engineering and cloud infrastructure, and actively contribute to continuous improvement within the team
• Monitor, debug, and optimize model performance and production infrastructure, ensuring robustness, scalability, and efficiency
• Contribute effectively in an agile development environment, embracing iterative delivery, ownership, and continuous learning
• Partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders (product managers, engineers, and data teams) to deliver reliable, high-impact ML-powered products

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience)
• 2–5 years of industry experience building and deploying machine learning systems in production environments

• Strong programming skills in Python, Java/Kotlin, PySpark.
• Hands-on experience with ML frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
• Experience designing and deploying microservices-based architectures, preferably on AWS (e.g., SageMaker, DynamoDB, Athena, Glue, Iceberg)

• Hand on experience with MLOps best practices: CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), testing (TDD), experiment tracking (MLflow), and workflow orchestration
• Experience with model deployment, orchestration (e.g., Apache Airflow), and scalable infrastructure, including efficient CPU/GPU utilization
• Solid understanding of end-to-end ML lifecycle: data ingestion, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring

• Strong foundation in software engineering principles, including object-oriented design, modularity, and maintainability
• Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts effectively

• Experience in deploying agents into production.
