GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and preventative maintenance work for Tooele County buildings and facilities. Troubleshoots more complex problems, completes work orders, assists with projects, and provides guidance to other maintenance employees.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Facilities Director. Performs assigned work with limited supervision and is expected to use good judgment when troubleshooting and completing work.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May serve as a lead worker and provide direction to maintenance employees, temporary employees, seasonal employees, volunteers, and contractors as assigned.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Performs skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and preventative maintenance on County buildings and facilities.
  • Troubleshoots electrical, plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, irrigation, and other building systems.
  • Completes and documents work orders.
  • Performs inspections and identifies maintenance problems before they become larger repairs.
  • Performs carpentry, concrete, drywall, painting, flooring, plumbing, electrical, welding, and other construction and repair work.
  • Repairs and maintains doors, locks, lighting, HVAC equipment, boilers, pumps, plumbing, electrical systems, and other building equipment.
  • Operates and maintains heavy equipment, vehicles, power tools, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Assists with building improvement and construction projects.
  • Helps coordinate and oversee contractors performing work at County facilities.
  • Provides direction and assistance to other maintenance employees.
  • Assists with estimating repair costs and identifying needed materials and equipment.
  • Assists with preparing County facilities for meetings, events, and other activities.
  • Responds to emergency maintenance problems and performs necessary repairs.
  • Performs snow removal and other weather-related maintenance.
  • Maintains accurate records of repairs, inspections, equipment, and work performed.
  • Helps ensure County facilities are safe, clean, secure, and operational.
  • Follows County safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or equivalent.

At least three (3) years of experience in building maintenance, construction, mechanical work, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, heavy equipment operation, or a related field.

OR

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of building maintenance and repair.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices and safe work procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair more complex maintenance problems.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand plans, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to provide direction to other employees and coordinate work with contractors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to use computers, tablets, and electronic work-order systems.

Must possess a valid Utah driver's license.

Must be able to work flexible hours, variable shifts, weekends, holidays and participate in the department's 24-hour on-call requirements.

Must have OSHA training for hazardous material handling and confined space entry.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position requires frequent lifting of up to 100 pounds, with occasional lifting of heavier materials or equipment. Work may require bending, twisting, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working on ladders, elevated surfaces, or in confined areas.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may involve extreme weather, heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, and other conditions associated with building maintenance.

Must be able to safely use required personal protective equipment and follow safety procedures.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Must maintain a competent or higher overall rating on performance evaluations.

Employees are expected to demonstrate good attendance, dependability, safe work practices, quality workmanship, good judgment, and the ability to work effectively with employees, contractors, vendors, and the public.
