The Union Low Voltage Electrician Network and Fiber Optic Cabling is responsible for installing, terminating, testing, and maintaining structured cabling systems, including copper (Cat5e/6/6A) and fiber optic infrastructure, in support of network and telecommunications systems at institutional sites. Working independently on most assignments, this journeyman-level electrician demonstrates strong technical expertise in cable pathway design, termination standards, fiber splicing and testing, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable, code-compliant network connectivity across campus facilities.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Assist in the installation, termination, and testing of structured cabling systems, including Cat5e/6/6A copper and single-mode/multi-mode fiber optic cable, in accordance with project requirements and industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI).
- →Support fiber optic splicing, fusion welding, and testing using OTDR, light meters, and other specialized test equipment; assist in documenting and resolving loss/attenuation issues.
- →Help mount, connect, and configure network racks, patch panels, fiber enclosures, and related telecommunications hardware under the guidance of experienced technicians.
- →Participate in routine maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting of copper and fiber cabling plant, network closets, and data centers.
- →Interpret blueprints, riser diagrams, site plans, and job specifications to support proper installation and code compliance.
- →Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, including as-built drawings, cable labeling records, test results, and service reports.
- →Adhere to all safety regulations, union guidelines, and University and client standards at all times.
- →Communicate effectively with clients, project managers, IT/network staff, and other trades throughout the installation process.
- →Participate in ongoing union and on-the-job training to develop proficiency in network cabling technology and industry standards.
- →Performs other related work as needed.
- Communicates clearly and collaborates effectively across teams and trade groups to support project progress and maintain alignment.
- Demonstrates reliability and a willingness to take direction, ask questions, and develop skills in a structured apprenticeship environment.
- Applies foundational knowledge of fiber optic and copper cabling installation, termination, and testing with a commitment to continuous learning.
- Manages assigned tasks with attention to detail, personal accountability, and a commitment to safe and compliant work practices.
- Adapts to a fast-paced, dynamic field environment with shifting project priorities and site conditions.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- No prior professional experience required; enrollment in, or eligibility for, a registered IBEW apprenticeship program is required.
- Exposure to or coursework in low-voltage, network, or fiber optic cabling preferred.
- Background in an institutional, medical center, or academic environment is a plus.
- Enrollment in I.B.E.W. Local 134 apprenticeship program (Electrical B card) required.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Basic proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook) for data entry and documentation within internal applications.
- Familiarity with hand and power tools used in low-voltage cabling installation.
Requirements

- Lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds and work on ladders.
