The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, is a vibrant and research-active department with strengths across many areas of philosophy, including ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, political philosophy, metaphysics, logic, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and decision theory. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Philosophy, and hosts the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major (PPE), as well as the university’s new BA in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI, in collaboration with AIM). Our faculty and students pursue philosophical questions with rigor, creativity, and attention to their significance for human life, public reason, science, technology, and society.
The Department of Philosophy seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Philosophy of Mind, with teaching competence in the Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. The successful candidate will maintain an active, innovative research program that interfaces with the cognitive and neurosciences; teach and mentor undergraduates as well as graduate students in our PhD program; contribute to the department’s PPE and HCAI, where appropriate; and participate in departmental, university, and professional service.

Education: PHD or equivalent in Philosophy or related field by the time of appointment.
Experience: 2 years of research in Philosophy of Mind, and some prior teaching experience at the university level.
Preferences:
Ability to contribute teaching relevant to the new BA program in Human-Centered AI.
