The Office of Health is looking for a dedicated professional with a passion for medical research and experience in a PC2 research laboratory setting to join their team. 

As our new Research Laboratory Coordinator, you will play a critical role in the oversight and operational management of the Research Laboratory at the University’s Medical Science Precinct (MSP), in Hobart’s CBD.

The Key responsibilities of this role centre on themes of safety, regulatory and legislative compliance, and the effective operation of research facilities. This significant PC2 research laboratory accommodates over 150 users undertaking and supporting world-class medical research. This laboratory facilitates research across a variety of medical science fields and makes use of a range of modern technologies including multiphoton and super resolution microscopy, flow cytometry and diverse molecular biological research techniques. The key users of the Research Laboratory are researchers from the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, Tasmanian School of Medicine and Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre.

Responsibilities

  • Effective operational management of the MSP Research Laboratory and associated areas, particularly concerning safety, adherence to biosecurity and regulatory requirements and delivery of core technologies.
  • Support the Research Operations Manager to ensure that research facilities meet all compliance requirements, particularly where concerning PC2 certification and the Australian and New Zealand Standard for Safety in Laboratories (AS/NZS 2243).
  • Management and coordination of laboratory manuals, safety risk assessments, standard operating procedures, safety audits, induction records for all personnel, chemical manifests, asset registers and other documentation are developed and maintained, with a focus on continual improvement.
  • Ensure that best-practice processes are in place to manage research infrastructure, including liquid nitrogen facilities, autoclaves, reticulated gas supplies, chemical storage and waste, fridges and freezers.
  • Support and coordinate the delivery of core technologies (for example microscopy and flow cytometry), including maintenance, certification and cost recovery processes.
  • Coordinate the commissioning, routine servicing, calibration and repair of sensitive laboratory equipment and infrastructure, acting as the primary liaison between external service providers, research personnel, and management.
  • Management of a team of casual staff that facilitates the out-of-hours response to laboratory alarms.­
  •  A degree with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Significant experience in providing technical laboratory support including experience in the development, implementation, and management of risk assessments, safe working practices and standard operating protocols in a changing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in laboratory practices and hazardous goods management, including safe handling, storage and disposal, and WHS issues.
  • Demonstrated understanding of statutory regulations encompassing laboratory operations, including but not limited to, OGTR regulations and workplace health and safety standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and solve complex technical and non-technical problems and to adapt rapidly to changing priorities and tasks.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of people and organisations and negotiate with senior representatives from internal and external organisations.

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 7 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $130,943 comprising base salary within the range of $101,821 to $111,917 plus 17% superannuation.
