About UpHill
At UpHill, our mission is to increase clinical capacity so healthcare professionals can focus on what matters most — the patients. Healthcare teams are either stretched thin by work that can be automated or weighed down by waste that can be avoided. UpHill's intelligent automated platform uses hospital data and patient conversations to turn chaos into useful and efficient interactions.
We build conversational AI agents, intelligent clinical pathways, and care orchestration tools that empower clinicians to work at their full potential — deployed across leading hospitals in Europe, with 100K+ lives impacted and over 1 million clinical interactions mediated. UpHill Route is a certified Class IIa Medical Device.
We're a team of curious and creative people who believe technology should enhance — not replace — the work of healthcare professionals. If you're excited about making a real impact in one of the most meaningful industries in the world, you just might be an Uphiller.
Today we're looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to join our platform team — a hybrid role sitting at the intersection of DevOps and core backend engineering. You'll architect and operate the cloud infrastructure that powers our product suite, build and maintain backend services, and own the internal developer platform that helps our engineering teams move fast and safely.
Stack Used
- AWS — ECS/Fargate, Lambda, SQS, EventBridge, S3, RDS, CloudFront, Cognito, VPC/IAM — Terraform
- Docker · Docker Compose
- GitHub Actions (CI/CD)
- Python · Java / Spring Boot (backend services)
- PostgreSQL · Redis
- DataDog · CloudWatch (observability)
Responsibilities
- Architect and maintain cloud infrastructure: Build and operate secure, scalable AWS infrastructure using Terraform across a multi-account architecture. Own it from design to production.
- Drive CI/CD excellence: Design, maintain, and improve deployment pipelines that enable fast, safe, and reliable releases across all engineering teams.
- Contribute to backend services: Work directly on backend Python and Java/Spring Boot services when needed — the platform team is not purely infrastructure; you build things too.
- Own observability and reliability: Improve monitoring, logging, and alerting across the stack. Ensure teams have the visibility they need to operate and debug production systems confidently.
- Elevate developer experience: Identify and remove friction in the development workflow — better tooling, cleaner local environments, faster feedback loops, reusable infrastructure modules.
- Optimize for cost and performance: Continuously evaluate infrastructure spend and service performance, proposing and implementing improvements.
- Collaborate across engineering: Work closely with product and AI engineering teams to translate infrastructure needs into robust, scalable solutions.
- Mentor and grow the team: Promote a culture of ownership, operational excellence, and continuous learning. Help junior engineers level up.
- Ownership mentality: You ship and maintain what you build.
- Autonomous but collaborative: Capable of owning initiatives end-to-end while working effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Product-focused: You understand why reliability, scalability, and developer speed directly impact business outcomes.
Main Requirements
- MSc/BSc in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with AWS (ECS/Fargate, Lambda, VPC, IAM, RDS, SQS, CloudFront, etc.)
- Strong proficiency in Terraform for infrastructure-as-code
- Experience with AWS Organizations and managing a multi-account cloud architecture
- Solid experience with CI/CD tools and practices (GitHub Actions preferred)
- Hands-on experience with Docker and containerised deployments
- Experience with backend development — comfortable reading, writing, and reviewing Python or Java code
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL and Redis in production
- Strong observability mindset — experience with DataDog, CloudWatch, or similar tools; understands logging, metrics, and alerting in production-grade systems
- Good knowledge of cloud security best practices (IAM least-privilege, secrets management, network segmentation)
- Strong testing mindset — infrastructure changes are validated before they reach production
- Self-starter who takes initiative and drives projects forward independently
- Strong communication skills in English, written and verbal
Strong Plus
- Experience with Python scripting for automation and tooling
- Knowledge of LocalStack or similar local AWS emulation tools
- Familiarity with Kubernetes or container orchestration beyond ECS
- Experience with CDK, Pulumi, or other IaC alternatives to Terraform
- Background in healthcare, medical devices, or regulated industries
- Knowledge of cost optimisation strategies (Savings Plans, Spot Instances, rightsizing)
- Experience with service mesh or internal networking (AWS App Mesh, etc.)
- HL7v2 / FHIR awareness
What You'll Get
- Be part of a dynamic, mission-driven team shaping the future of healthcare
- Competitive salary
- Comprehensive health insurance
- Top-tier equipment — new MacBook + budget for peripherals
- Flexible schedule and hybrid work model
- Direct ownership of critical infrastructure and systems used daily by the entire engineering team
- No-BS culture: a small, senior team where your voice shapes architecture and engineering practices
