Under general supervision, perform advanced-level diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of school buses and other district fleet vehicles. Ensure vehicles are maintained in a safe, reliable, and serviceable condition in accordance with district procedures and applicable federal and state requirements. Provide technical guidance to other mechanics and operate school buses or district vehicles as needed.
• Perform advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on school buses and light-, medium-, and heavy-duty district vehicles.
• Diagnose, repair, and install components on diesel, gasoline, propane, hybrid, and electric-powered vehicles.
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, charging systems, and electronic control systems.
• Diagnose and repair transmissions, drivetrains, differentials, steering systems, suspensions, axles, and related components.
• Inspect, service, and repair air, hydraulic, and anti-lock braking systems in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
• Diagnose and repair exhaust, emissions, and after-treatment systems, including diesel particulate filters and selective catalytic reduction systems.
• Service and repair vehicle heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and required repairs according to established schedules and manufacturer specifications.
• Use diagnostic software, scan tools, electronic testing equipment, technical manuals, and schematics to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical problems.
• Conduct road tests and operational checks to verify vehicle performance and confirm that repairs have been completed safely and correctly.
• Respond to vehicle breakdowns, accidents, emergencies, and after-hours service calls; perform roadside repairs or coordinate vehicle recovery when necessary.
• Complete work orders, inspection forms, parts requests, maintenance records, and other documentation accurately and within established timelines.
• Maintain tools, equipment, assigned work areas, and service vehicles in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
• Provide technical assistance and on-the-job guidance to entry- and journey-level mechanics; assist with complex repairs and quality-control inspections.
• Operate school buses and other district vehicles as required and perform other duties assigned by the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor or Fleet Director.
• Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and effectively perform repairs for all vehicles. This will include the removal/replacement of engines, fuel systems, electrical, and diagnose transmissions (RR).
• After treatment systems, including EGR Valves, EGR Coolers, SCR, DPF, DOC, and Injector Diagnostics.
• Turbo Chargers-Cylinder Cutout Test-Leak down test-High Pressure pump test-ICP & IPR.
• Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs without supervision.
• Ability to operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair.
• Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts.
• Acceptable communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to operate a school bus.
• Ability to operate a tow truck.
• Ability to work shifts as needed.
• Ability to use time wisely to ensure efficient and effective operations.
• Ability to pass an alcohol and drug test
• Accredited High School Diploma or equivalent (U.S.A. equivalency) required.
• Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) required.
• Passenger and School Bus endorsements must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
• Minimum of two ASE Automotive Certifications, School Bus S1-S7, or obtain ASE certifications required.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License and a record that meets the District’s standard required.
• 3-5 years of direct experience with Auto/truck maintenance and repair experience required.
Physical Demands
Field / Physical Labor: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, move throughout the room and or facility, communicate verbally and electronically, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, ability to work overhead, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and or crawl; climb; balance, and drive. Employee may be required to work on knees from time to time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust and focus. May be required to work off scaffolding and a minimum of 40-foot ladder. May be required to operate heavy equipment.
Work Environment
Field / Physical Labor: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. This position involves work related to operating vehicles and tools as well as other equipment as needed. May be required to perform manual labor during inclement weather. Occasionally exposed to environmental conditions such as moving mechanical parts, fumes, air borne particles, biohazardous materials, etc. Must be able to safely tolerate the elements as required for the position. May be required to perform duties in proximity of children.
