Location: Mount Vernon, NY
Pay Rate: $30.00 per hour
Hours: 8:00AM-4:00PM & 10:00AM-6:00PM (35 hrs.)
OVERVIEW OF PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This Engagement Specialist / Driver combines transportation support with active participant engagement, outreach, and retention efforts. The Engagement Specialist fosters trust, promotes recovery-oriented principles, supports attendance and participation in services, and helps create a welcoming, trauma-informed environment.
This role is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and respectful transportation services to people with disabilities and seniors while also serving as a key frontline engagement professional within the behavioral health programs.
The position requires strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, sound judgment, and the ability to effectively interact with individual using transportation and program participants.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
TRANSPORTATION
Report on time to designated locations for pickup and drop-off.
Ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers at all times.
Adhere to all traffic laws, agency vehicle policies, and safety procedures.
Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
Immediately report maintenance issues, accidents, or safety concerns to supervisor.
Drive to and from designated pickup areas.
Maintain vehicle cleanliness and organization.
Document transportation logs and engagement-related contacts as required.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST
Serve as a welcoming first point of contact for participants.
Build rapport with participants using trauma-informed and recovery-oriented approaches.
Encourage consistent attendance and active participation in program services.
Support re-engagement efforts for participants who disengage from services.
Observe and report behavioral concerns, or safety issues to clinical staff.
Assist participants in transitioning safely into the program environment.
Provide supportive listening and appropriate encouragement while maintaining professional boundaries.
Recognize signs of behavioral distress, or crisis.
Immediately notify clinical or supervisory staff of concerns.
Follow program emergency and crisis response protocols.
Maintain a calm and supportive presence during high-stress situations.
Assist with managing front door operations at 256 Washington St. between transportation runs.
Represent the program positively in the community when transporting participants.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONAL / ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT:
Greet visitors and participants professionally.
Ensure building safety and appropriate visitor procedures are followed.
Communicate effectively with clinical and administrative staff regarding participant attendance and engagement.
Participate in team meetings as requested.
Support program events, activities, and outreach efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:
Strong self-starting skills.
Demonstrated reliability and dependability.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approach.
Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Ability to remain calm under pressure.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record required.
Experience working with vulnerable populations a plus.
Individuals with peer certification are strongly encouraged to apply.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
Ability to lift up to 25–40 lbs.
Ability to assist passengers entering and exiting vehicles.
Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Frequent walking, standing, and light physical activity within the facility.
