Amherst County is seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused professional to join the Treasurer's Office as a Deputy Treasurer I. This position plays an important role in serving the public by assisting citizens with tax inquiries, processing payments, maintaining accurate financial records, and supporting the County's tax collection operations.
Starting Pay is $35,000+ annually depending on relevant experience
The ideal candidate will have experience handling monetary transactions, providing excellent customer service, and working in a fast-paced office environment where accuracy and professionalism are essential.
What You'll Do:- Serve as the first point of contact for citizens regarding tax payments, accounts, and general inquiries by phone and in person.
- Collect, receipt, and properly account for taxes, fees, and other payments while following established security and cash-handling procedures.
- Process incoming mail and related correspondence.
- Enter and maintain accurate financial and customer information in County systems.
- Assist with the preparation of reports and other financial records as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive financial information.
- Provide exceptional customer service while representing Amherst County in a courteous and professional manner.
- Support the daily operations of the Treasurer's Office and assist with other duties as assigned.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of bookkeeping, accounting, and cash-handling practices.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to analyze financial information and maintain accurate records.
- Proficiency with computers and standard office software applications.
- Ability to learn and apply laws, regulations, and procedures related to local tax collection.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide clear information and instructions to the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and citizens.
- Ability to perform data entry accurately and efficiently.
Requirements
~1 min read- Experience in local government finance, tax collection, banking, accounting, or a related field.
- Experience with local property tax administration.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Some college coursework in accounting, finance, business, or a related field preferred.
- Three to five years of experience in accounting, banking, cash handling, finance, or customer service involving monetary transactions.
- Experience in local property tax administration is preferred.
Work is primarily performed in an office environment and requires prolonged sitting, frequent use of computers and office equipment, and occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the public and to perform detailed work involving financial records and data entry.
