R10102013 Research Engineer, Welding (Open)

Location:

Newark, DE (ICD) - R&D - Customer Processes

The Innovation and Development Division (IDD) drives the innovation strategy for the Hubs and Operations, and contributes to the Group's transformation. It is responsible for imagining, developing and incubating new solutions until they are brought to market, particularly when it comes to offers with a high technological content (including digital and IT). IDD gathers more than 3,000 employees from 70 nationalities at 60 sites.

The Research Engineer operates at the cutting edge of our technology, driving the development of first-of-their-kind prototypes and products. This role exists to bridge the gap between early-stage R&D innovations and real-world customer pilot deployments. The successful candidate will be a driven self-starter with a rigorous approach to problem-solving, capable of seamlessly integrating mechanical design, advanced welding metallurgy, and automated industrial robotics into fully functional, industrial-grade systems. Ultimately, this role accelerates our time-to-market; true success for this position is defined as validating these robotic welding solutions in the field, independently navigating technical and process-related roadblocks, and executing a seamless hand-off to our internal engineering and operations teams for full-scale commercialization and lifecycle management.

  • Future Security: 401(k) Retirement Plan with company match, Tuition Assistance, Paid Holidays, Vacation, and Sick time.
  • Early Access: Your benefits start after just 30 days of employment

Safety

  • Applies technical know-how and understanding of the company’s Industrial Management System (IMS) to contribute to the Innovation Campus’ safety, quality, and reliability plans.
  • Serves as a safety role model promoting IMS compliance and continuous improvement in safety practices.
  • Defines Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Engineering and Customer Solutions

  • Innovation & Ideation: Formulate innovative welding concepts by synthesizing feedback from customer discussions, internal cross-functional teams, and hands-on observations in the testing lab.
  • System Design and Process Development: Lead the end-to-end development of novel welding systems in a logical and systematic manner. Integrate mechanical components and advanced welding processes through rigorous, hands-on laboratory testing to create first-of-their-kind prototypes for pilot.
  • Customer Pilot Deployment & Tech Transfer: Deploy and validate new welding technologies directly at customer pilot sites in a professional and technical capacity. While you will champion the pilot phase, your objective is to package the technical solution, comprehensive lab data, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and operational parameters for a seamless hand-off to the business-led engineering and operations teams who will take over the product.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Rapidly diagnose and resolve complex process failures—such as weld defects or metallurgical inconsistencies—during prototyping, using strong metallurgical problem-solving skills to implement effective design pivots.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with R&D, sales, and manufacturing to ensure lab-developed welding processes are scalable, align with internal capabilities, and meet market demands.
  • Project Management: Efficiently manage lab schedules, prototyping resources, and critical technical documentation (e.g., NDT results, metallurgical evaluations) to ensure pilot deployments remain on track and within scope.
