Behavioral Health Analytics Intern

Position Summary

• The Medicaid and Behavioral Health Analytics team and Behavioral Health Business Office are responsible for leading data-driven oversight of Allegheny County’s Medicaid and county-funded behavioral health system, ensuring that services are high-quality, accessible, and responsive to client needs. It brings together expertise in analytics, technology, policy, contracting, and quality improvement to identify gaps in service performance, optimize funding streams, and drive solutions that improve client experience and system outcomes. The team is committed to safeguarding access to critical behavioral health services for uninsured residents, particularly as HR-1-related Medicaid churn increases the number of individuals who rely on county-funded care. 
  

Main Responsibilities 

• Contribute to core functional areas including data analysis, health sciences research, and policy research.
• Work with datasets to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
• Support development of measures and analytical frameworks used in health services and behavioral health research.
• Conduct high‑level policy scans and impact reviews.
• Synthesize information and prepare summaries, briefs, or visualizations.
• Assist with evaluation and performance‑monitoring activities.
• Provide general analytic and research support across the team.
• Assess system performance, explore emerging issues, and contribute to evidence‑based recommendations.

Preferred Skills 

• Blend of analytical, policy, and operational skills suited for complex health system oversight.
• Strong foundation in health policy and health systems, including ability to synthesize state and federal policy changes.
• Ability to evaluate policy implications for eligibility, funding, and care delivery, and contribute to policy monitoring and impact assessments.
• Proficiency in data analysis, including interpreting health care utilization and cost trends.
• Strong communication skills, especially translating complex data or policy insights into clear summaries, visuals, and actionable recommendations.
• Curiosity, adaptability, and comfort working across operational, analytical, and policy domains.
• Prepared to contribute meaningfully to the Behavioral Health Business Office and Medicaid & Behavioral Health Analytics team.
